View Full Version : Capturing info from Sony DVD 201 e
stripey_boy
Hi.
I have recently purchased a Sony DVD 201 E. I can not get any other programs to capture film from the camcorder except for image maker which came with the camera and is pretty useless.
I am using a USB 2.0 hub and windows XP with series pack 2.
Can any one put me out of my misery, it's driving me mad?
Cheers

Hi Stripey_Boy: I have exactly the same problem you have ,but I can not get the right information about this headache. Did you get a solution? In positive case, could you share or give me it. I would appreciatte it so much.
Thanks any way.

Hi Guys,
The capturing process has already been done for you !!! ... It's the little round disc. Put it in your computer and edit with any program that can edit normal DVD data .... or do what I do ... use one of the many free tools to convert the vob files to mpeg or avi and use programs that don't support vob.
I shoot everything in VR mode ... lots of software supports VR now. Pop the disc out, into your computer and away you go.

Hi James: Thanks for your help. But the idea is to keep the little round disk inside the camcorde 201 and capture pictures or videos via the Usb link with an appropiate video software, like Roxio, Ulead or Sony. Just Imagemixer do it.
Regards.

Yes of course ... and you can do it that way no problem at all. But your DVD rom is many many times faster at reading data than the camera.
I forget my results, but I transfered a hole disc through the camera and then transferred the same disc through my DVD rom. I can't remember the exact time, but it was double to triple the speed ... so now I always do it that way.
I don't quite no why but I find myself wary of constantly swapping discs in and out while transfering data, the spindle looks like it could wear out after a while.
Cheers

Oh, forgot to say, but changing the driver you can use most programs. Just use a standard windows dvd rom driver and pick up the movie files from the drive.
The software must be able to udit vob files though.

Software to edit your discs ?
Lets see .... there's is some in the box with you camera, there's also some included with Windows XP.
There are doesen's available for free trail on the internet.
And of course your local software shop will have plenty too.
And who knows you may even have some sitting in a draw or cubord ... hard to say though.
If your asking what I use ? ... I use three programs in total.
I use image mixer for camera access only. (provided with camera)
I use Windows Movie Maker 2.1 for editing. (provided with XP SP2)
And I use Nero 6 for DVD authoring (menu's, chapters etc) (nero.com)
Hope this helps

Hi, I am a new member.
Recently purchased a Sony DCR-DVD201E and have a few queries someone may be able to help me with. I would like to edit a move in Windows Movie Maker 2.1 and burn to a DVD. Perhaps someone may be able to summarise the procedures if possible.
Transferred some footage to my PC using Imagemaker, but although my
computer is only 18 months old does not have a Hi Speed USB port.
Would this affect the quality?
I then saved the scenes in an Album in Imagemaker.
2. I want to then save them in a format compatible with Moviemaker
so that I can transfer and edit them.

Forgot to say that I did manage to produce an AVI file with Moviemaker
but the quality was a great deal poorer than the original on the DVD disc
and that in the Album.

Once you have added the scenes you want from your camera to an album in imagemixer the files are ready to go. Close image mixer and using windows explorer find your "Capture" directory. By default it is at:
C:\Program Files\PIXELA\ImageMixer\Capture
So long as the sony codec has installed properly you can edit these mpegs in movie maker.
USB 1.0 will have no effect on quality, only speed. The disc's simply contain data ..... there is no "capturing" process going on when you transfer your files to the computer.

Thanks James, I did this, but MM2 states something about
and interface etc., and will not accept the files on my PC.
running Windows CP Home Edition SP2.
It does on the Laptop though running MM2 on Windows XP Home Edition.
Where would I get the Sony codec?

It's normally automatically registered when you install imagemixer.
I must admit I have had one computer do this, and I can't remember what we did to fix it.
As soon as I get a chance I'll have a play with it, unfortunately I'm away at the moment and the camera etc it at home. Won't get to it till next week.
The computer you trying to edit on ? ... is it the same computer you transferred the video on ??

Thanks James, but I have finally succeeded in my endeavour
to burn a DVD, and extremely happy with the results from the
Sony DVD 201E.
Compare more than favourably with the DVDs from my
last camera a Sony TRV740E Hi8.
In WMM2 I went to Tools/Options/Compatability and
disabled the filters, leaving only the XL Decompress, AVI_PASS
only two of the Neros: Nero DVD Decoder and Nero Video Encoder
but disabled the Nero Digital Audio Encoder (as this appeared to
mute the sound), and left in the Pixela AC-3 Encoder and Pixela MPEG2 Video Decoder. I did all this by a process of elimination.
Using Imagemaker, I imported the footage from the
finalised disk in the Sony into the Imagemaker Capture folder.
I then opened (successfully) these scenes into WMM2, edited them, added transitions etc., and saved them to my Hard Drive as DVD-AVI files.
Then, using Nero Express S2 burned them to DVD.
To make sure things go smoothly prior to a session with
WMM2 I always defrag the Hard Drive beforehand.

Fantastic, well done.
That will certainly be a suggestion to future posts on Movie Maker. Or hopefully people will read your post.
I'm from Christchurch, been in Melbourne for 18months. Not that many people from this side of the planet on this forum !! .... all the best.

I have finally succeeded in my endeavour to burn a DVD, and extremely happy with the results from the Sony DVD 201E. Glad to hear you got it working, seems there are a few other people trying to do the same thing, will try to point them to this thread if I run into them.

Hi Liani,
Following your suggestions above i am now able to edit the files in my capture folder using MMM. But if i try to edit the captured videos in Pinnacle Studio 9 the videos will not play in the editor. I will be able to import the video, but attempting to edit/play the video results in nothing happening. If I use ImageMixer to take the movies from the ablum and convert them to MPEG2, then i can edit those movies in Pinnace Studio, but I'm afraid that converting them to MPEG2 in imagestudio might be reprocessing the video and as a result losing video quality.
Does anyone know either how to get Pinnacle Studio to edit the files in the capture folder or if converting the captured video to MPEG2 in ImageStudio loses any quality either on the video or sound?
Thanks,
Greg

I'm glad some of you have been through this for us newbs :D although I would not wish it on anyone.
SYSTEM: XP w/WMM2, Nvidia ti 4200, 120 G. H/D, 768 ram.
K, couple of quick questions/answers I hope:
1) My DVD computer reads regular size DVD-R fine but freezes when the mini DVD is inserted. It is finalized and looks great played through the TV/DVD. Any thoughts?
2) After attaching USB and downloading it to hard drive (forever) into Imagemixer, I can't transfer it into WMM2. Help on this also.
Thanks,

I read your post about successfully completing a DVD using a SONY DVD201 and Windows Movie Maker.
I want to try this but need some additional clarification.
Did you import the clips from your camera using Image Mixer?
Did you then do your editing in Movie Maker?
I have done both of these steps but was unable to burn the project to DVD from Movie Maker.
Are you also using Nero? What do I need to do to get my project from Movie Maker to DVD.
Thanks so much
Deb
jamesg
Windows Movie Maker has no burning abilty, it is only an editor.
Save your project as a movie file (normally DV-AVI format)
And then burn with an encoding / authoring program like Nero.

Hi Guys,
I can import the clips, but they come in only as audio. In the codes page I don't seem to have the "PIXELA MPEG2 Video Decoder" installed. This seems to be the problem. Can someone please check in the compatability window in WMM to see what the file is called. That way I can see if it is on my PC, if not I will have to get someone to send it to me.
I have uninstalled and re-installed IM a few times but it doesn't show up.
The other codec that is mentioned about that I don't have is the "XL Decompress, AVI-Pass" what are the chances of that being neccessary?
Thanks in advance
Scotty
