Since I've installed a DR5000 hard drive on my DV5000u, I occasionally get a 'no signal' indication in the viewfinder when I switch between VTR and CAM with the mode switch. I had an unfortunate experience a few weeks ago when I recorded 30 minutes of black on both the tape and hard drive and I suspect it may have something to do with this message in the viewfinder. Anyone have any ideas?
I've received some detailed info from both JVC and the FireStore folks. If you have a GY-DV5000 and want to use the FireStore DR5000 in the fully integrated mode there are some things to check first. First, make sure that there is an (A) after the model number on the front ID plate or a small paper punch sized sticker with the (A). You should also verify the firmware level of your DV5000 to make sure that you have at least 5.0 (If my memory serves me, press 'full auto' and 'status' together for a few seconds). The other major issue is being able to run the camera without the external 1394 cable. The newer DV5000 cameras have an extra 1394 cable hidden inside the right side of the camera that is hard wired to the integrated DV5000/DR5000 connector. By removing the PC board end of the rear four pin 1394 jack cable and plugging in the one that is wired to the integrated connector, the 1394 signal will pass directly to the DR5000 without the external cable. Unfortunately, my camera was manufactured prior to this nifty addition.
I'll also say that I'm not very happy with either of the JVC recommended Regional Repair centers here in Georgia. After calling both of them in an attempt to get an estimate of the cost and time involved to have the cable added and firmware upgraded, I've been virtually ignored by both of them.
