View Full Version : How to record public 1-on-1 interview

iKwak
Two buddies and I will go out on a public, like the nearby shopping mall and will do random interviews. It will be an evangelism reachout, where we seek a person and ask them about their religion and teach them about christianity and all that good stuff.

I will take a lightweight tripod and my camcorder and 1 or 2 of the buddies will do the interview.

1) I've seen other videos online from christian website (forgot where) of their video recording of the interview. Do you normally ask the interviewee if you can record the interview first?

2) We have done the evangelism several times but this will be the first time with a camcorder. The video is to show our congregation and promote evangelism. How would you approach a person without intimidating them? We sure don't want people thinking we are soliciting them. :/

Thanks for your time.

Oh and if you happen to know or find a similar video online (public interview), please let me know. Thank you.

Just like with anything, personality and how you approach them counts. It also counts to be honest and tell them what you just posted there. Say hi and extend your hand and say your name and say something like:

'Hi we are doing research on evangelical issues and we are not going to try to convert you, we just want to know your opinions on it.'

Saying your name first opens a lot of people quickly and extending your hand makes people stay more or pause so you can ask them about your questions. I also pays to have a clipboard so you can look professional as well as have your questions right there.

If they seemed interested then ask if you can ask them some questions and then also ask if you can interview them on camera. Do not forget to get a model release from these people and thank them enough. As an incentive you might want to tell them that you can give them a copy of their interview, either by mail or via posted webpage they can go see it. This way they would be more likely to participate.

There are basic human psychology involved as well as a bit of sociology when approching somebody in public. Dress well and be presentable. It is better if you are well groomed and non-threatening when approaching people. Good Luck...:)
