View Full Version : Optura 500 & Panning

Thinking about buying the Optura 500 but I've noticed a few threads where users complained about panning with the Optura 400. Does anyone know if this problem has been fixed in the 500? Thanks.

Since no Canon owner has replied, let me tell you about my experience with a JVC.
If the video Gain-up settings are set to one of their higher settings, the shutter speed slows down so much that you get either or both strobing and blurring. In the JVC this happens only if you use the strongest gain-up and the light source is Alternating Current electrical (50/60Hz). (the following work fine as light sources at any setting: candlelight, campfire, fireworks, sun, moon).
I assume you can SET the gain-up at various sensitivity levels: in the JVC they are: OFF, AGC, AUTO-A/NightShot. AGC handles all light sources fine with less brightness than Auto-A/NightShot. Auto-A/Nightshot create the blurring/strobing if the light source is electrical AND there is either camera or subject movement. e.g.: you could shoot a painting in a halogen-lit museum, or a cityscape at night from a hilltop IF you didn't move the camera (e.g. no panning/zooming as these have electrical light sources). The advantage of the latter is it sees about as well as I can at night (I could probably use AGC in the museum).

Thanks for the information - definitely informative. I actually went ahead and got the Optura 40 for Christmas. So far I've been pretty happy with it. I've only had a chance to do some minor tests but what I thought was going to be the major caveat, low light recording, isn't half as bad as I expected. When I get a chance to play around some more I'm going to take your advice in hand.
