View Full Version : Lens Filter

PQuest
Greetings,

Can someone pls point me to where I can read up on how to use add-on lens filters (such as FD-L, skylight, etc) for procam such as JVC GY-DV500? Most articles I ran across pertained to still cameras. Is it unnecessary to apply color-enhancing lens filter to camcorders? Do still cameras and camcorders share the same filters providing they use the same size lens, of course?

It appears some lens filters may be better off used with internal focus lens ... is my assessment close or am I missing the facts altogether?

TIA,
PQuest

I only use filters on my DV300 that create effects that I can't do in post or at least not in post without rendering for hours - like star filter, diffuse, polarizing, fish eye etc.

The color filters, like all filters will will work if you have the adapter ring to fit your lense. I know on my DV300 it requires that I take off the inner hood guard to mount these ring adapters (depending on what you use). I am speaking about cokin filters here.

The inner hood guard is not the hood - it is this ring they put in to block you from adding anything to the lense. I still don't see the purpose of this thing. I also don't see the purpose of them (for the most part) permentaly attaching to hood...but thats another topic. Not sure how the DV500 is

The filters are about $9-14 and the adapter rings are 6-$9 so they are a nice addition.

As with the color filters- remember once you shoot with a color altering filter you can't go back.

The DV300 as well as the DV500 will have many adjustments for the image. I would just play with the color settings and white balance settings and obtain the best true image then go to the computer for your major color alterations. I think you would be much happier.

It is something for using filter with high level camera.

A good brochure is also available on Tiffen home page.
Some filters could be useful even for very good camera.
