View Full Version : Compatibility Issue

I'm very interested in purchasing the AGDVX100A camcorder, but I have some compatibility issues, or think I do. I use a Mac G4, dual processor at 533megahertz for each and have a gig of ram, and I use Premiere 6.5, Pro doesn't work on a Mac, After Effects and other software programs. I need some advice as to whether I can use what I have with this camcorder to capture, etc., or whether I have to add more hardware, software, etc....any help would be greatly appreciated!

The DVX100 is pretty computer agnostic. By that I mean that it doesn't care if you are using Mac, PC or Linux as long as you have Firewire and a capture/editing application. And, DV is DV. So, you should have no problem using Premiere with the DVX.

That's helpful. I would hate to have to change too much since I'm invested in a number of programs, etc....how do you think this cam compares with the Canon XL2?
I do mostly fictional work, dramatic narrative pieces and do a lot on the computer, using the footage as my "raw inspiration."
I just want to upgrade my production values and am looking at both of these cams, trying to decide which would be a better buy for me.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Lucinda,
That is a great debate question! I have not used either cam so I can't offer you any opinion based on experience. Both cams have strengths and weaknesses. And, both have been used to create excellent products. In fact, the DVX has been used to make several highly regarded movies.
I think a lot depends on how you intend to shoot. The XL2 is a shoulder mount cam and has removable lenses which may be a factor for you. I understand that most folks never change the lens so it may be a moot point. Otherwise, you can make excellent video with either one. I encourage you to read the posts here and in the Canon forum. There are lots of folks here with expertise in using these cams.

Thanks Guy! I have been reading.... it's still a hard call. I'll have to go and get the feel of both at a good retailer.....there's one in Pasadena that rents both. Thanks again! Lucinda
If anyone else has imput about this I'd love to hear.

You have to consider the method of shooting into the mix. I use more tripod style vs freehand. But you must consider the XL2 is more front heavy if you were to hold it for long periods of time shooting vs the DVX, not to mention it is heavy and bulky. Granted you can change lenses but the Leica Lens in the Pany is very good and the sound is very superior in quality. Even though I use a boom and a mike I find the microphone is good for upclose recording.
Pany also has a good promotion going on right now with 300USD rebates and other goodies. There is also the DVXuser groups in So. Cal for support. Talk to Rush at EVS in glendale. They have both cameras and they will answer your questions in more detail. www.evsonline.com
