View Full Version : What is the speed of PC350's USB and Firewire?

ColdBrew
I was getting video off my Sony PC350 using the USB connection, but I was never able to get over 22 fps at 640x480. I switched to Firewire and was able to get 720x480 at the full 30 fps.

Is it using USB 1? I assumed it was USB 2, but with the lack of bandwidth it doesn't seem so.

What speed is it's firewire connection?

Thanks in advance!

Theoretical transfer rate of firewire, IEEE 1394a, is 400Mbps and USB 2 is 480Mbps. In practice the firewire in real world situation is probably faster when many things are running, since it relys on peer-to-peer transfer without much more CPU resources. BTW, IEEE1394b is 800Mbps so there's no question whether which is going to be faster. Given that information, Cam to PC transfer rate is at 100Mbps and the camcorder "DV achieves approximately 5:1 compression, down to the fixed data rate of around 3.1 MBytes/sec, or 25 Mbits/sec. This is the video data rate; with audio and control information, the full DV data rate is actually 3.75 MB/sec, or 30 Mb/sec." (Source Manifest Technology (http://www.manifest-tech.com/media_pc/dv_tech.htm))

On the other hand USB1 transfer rate is max. 12Mbps. Here's more information:

Thats for the reply. You clarified some things for me.

Am I to assume from that that the Sony PC350 uses USB 1.1 and Firewire IEEE 1394a?

Most miniDV camcorders use firewire, IEEE-1394a, for capturing video to computers and USB1 for transfer of stills. There are few that is capable of capture video via USB2.

I guess I just assumed that since they only included a usb cable that it could be used to capture video. They should also include a firewire cable then or even in place of the USB.

Oh well I picked up a firewire cable for a little over $3 so everything is good now.

Thanks for the information.

Unless you want to USB video stream or create VCD only.
