View Full Version : DVCPRO HD question

I read at Wikipedia that DVCPRO HD "downsamples native 720p/1080i signals to a lower resolution. 720p is downsampled from 1280x720 to 960x720, and 1080i is downsampled from 1920x1080 to 1280x1080 for 59.94i and 1440x1080 for 50i." Is this true?--if it is, then HDV has better resolution: 1440x1080 and true 1280x720.
Here is the link to the Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DV. Scroll down to DVCPRO to see the above excerpt.

The imagers are 1/3" CCD, 16:9 native aspect ratio. These are scanned and captured at 1080p/60, and the signal is then converted to 1080i, cross converted to 720p or down converted to 480p/480i, or cross converted for the many modes on this camera. This assures the highest quality of recording.

For info on the DVCPRO, DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO HD codecs, see Adam Wilt's wonderful FAQ (http://www.adamwilt.com/DV-FAQ-tech.html#DV50formats). I wouldn't worry too much about the sampling. The HD Varicam uses the same sampling and its video is beautiful.
