View Full Version : Separate Audio Channels??
woodlyz
Hello,
I just purchased an AG-DVX100B and am filming a high school concert. For the concert they are having the audio mix done by a professional sound man. My plan for the audio is to go with a line level input from his board and put that on one channel and then have a separate mic positioned in the room for sound as well, then mix the two together in post. The reason being is that the sound guys concern is for the audio in the room so he could easily cut the sound out if its overpowering.
My question is how do I set the camera to have these two inputs go to separate channels. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

You can split the input to your camera using an adaptor from Radio Shack if you want. It's common for people who try this to experience a lot of noise whenever the cables are bumped or jostled in any way. If your camera is not going to be moved you might be ok. You might also solve a lot of the problem by using a cable to put space between your camera and the splitter. If you fasten down the splitter and the cables around it you could minimize the noise you will pick up.
I strongly suggest that you get the cables and the splitter ahead of time and make sure it won't be a problem for you. If you want to move your camera around you might have a real problem with noise if you don't set things up really well. It probably is possible to keep the noise out if you do things just right. But I'd want to make sure ahead of time.
You might consider getting a second recording device for your production. Most stereo vcr's actually have very good sound so you could use one if you didn't want to spend any money.
One other thing. Your camera accepts a mic input most likely. Usually cameras won't accept a sound input to the line inputs while recording video. You may want to use something to drop the level down on the line input if you intend to hook it to the mic input. An inline volume control (also available at RS) could attenuate the sound level for you.

Thank you for your response. I have considered getting a second recording device and may do that. On the Panasonic AG-DVX100B I am able to switch between mic and line level input in the two XLR adapters. My question is how do I set the settings on the camera so I can have one of those inputs at a line level on the right/left channel and the other input as a mic level on the opposite channel so I can then mix the two together in post?
Update: When I digitize my footage and go to edit I only have a single audio channel. I edit with Pinnacle Liquid edition. I'm wondering how I can take the footage and split the audio to right channel left channel in the editting process?

Conclusion
Well I figured out how to solve my problem. The camera aspect was fairly striaht forward based on the buttons on the camera. From there I had to enter the video into my computer via Liquid Edition with the audio in mono to give me separate audio tracks. Now I am able to edit the audio tracks separately. I had one track with a line input from the sound board and the other as an ambient mic for the room sound.
