It seems like a minor upgrade from SDR-S100 to support SDHC. I'm glad I didn't wait for SDR-S200. The price of 4GB SDHC is prohibitive.

From these specs you can see that the SDR-S200 is also limited to 2GB for standard SD cards, so there seems to be no improvement on the file system. I don't understand why they go for SDHC cards?
It would be better to support standard SD cards with more than 2GB instead.

I have to assume that this new SD format has a higher potential than the current SD format. That is, not limited to 4GB, but some much higher number. Otherwise, what's the point.

At least that explains why my two new Canon cameras can handle current 4GB SD cards and my SDR-S100 can't.

Bye.

According to the SDCard Association, the new SDHC will top out at 32 GB. So, that should give us a couple of years.

As I checked "SD Specifications Part 1 Physical Layer Simplified Specification Version 1.10 April 3, 2006" at sdcard.org , the maximum capacity of SD 1.1 is 32 GB. If the device support FAT32, it should be able to use the capacity. Sdcard.org says 8GB SD card is on the way.

If the new SD camcorder can support 4GB card, I guess it should support FAT32 on both SD 1.1 and SDHC (SD 2.0) because the limit of FAT16 is 2GB. The main advantage for SDHC over SD 1.1 is the guaranteed minimum transfer rate -- 2MB/s, 4MB/s and 6 MB/s. I have no idea how today hi-speed SD cards behave under some situations like discontinuous space or near full capacity. Perhaps soon we'll see if SDHC really worths for its performance over SD 1.1.

When Panasonic put 3 1/4.7" CCD's or larger in the SD camcorder, then I would consider to upgrade from SDR-S100 :D

Hi GAP
Do you have access to the SD specification documents?
I am looking for a way to have a look into the SD filesystem specifications to find out how the .moi files are built up.
If I would know how the moi file is build up then I could write a tool that creates the .moi from every .mod file.
Then we can use the SDR-S100 as a portable video player!!!!

Hi Sektionschef,

At sdcard.org, there's one free document for download. But it's only simplified version of physical layer. Try this link and click "Simplified Version of Physical Layer Spec"
http://www.sdcard.org/sd_memorycard/index.html

If you wanna look into the spec of file system, perhaps you might wanna pay SD Association for the licensing document of complete spec.

Hope this helps,

Thanks, GAP
That's my problem: I want to look into the specs of the filesystem without paying for them.
I still hope that someone can help me here...
