View Full Version : Question on filters

Methost
I just got a Cannon Elura 100. Are filters pretty much a required accessory for good film making? Could someone recommend some standard filters for a beginner? I would need them for the above listed camera.

Thanks in advance ...

Probably the best reason to have any filter is that they protect the lens on your camera. You can replace a scratched filter easily. It's hard to replace a scratched lens without it costing more than a new camera. For this reason most of us use either a UV or a clear protective filter or possibly a skylight filter and leave it on our cameras most of the time. They will reduce the amount of light getting to your camera though so there are times to take them off including when you're using a converter lens.

There are good reasons to use filters for all sorts of things other than this. I'm not sure any of them would be a make or break type thing. You can get by without a polarizer filter for example but it's nice to have if you want the sky to appear the correct color in your video. And the harsh light of fluorescent lights isn't the best thing for video but a good FLD filter will reduce the problems associated with that kind of light (green shade on everything, colors just not right, skin tones really off).

Filters operate the same for any camera so the only thing specific about your camera when it comes to filters would be the size of the filter.
