View Full Version : how many MB per 1min of HD, how many GB for feature-length movie?

from your experience, what is the ratio for a 2-hour flick that includes action sequences ? 1:10? (200 hrs of footage)

Well depends on what 'flavor' of HD you're talking about.
HDV... DVCPRO HD..HDCAM...
As for HDV, it's 3.5Megabytes per second, so thats 210Megabytes per minute. A lot !!
As for the 2hr movie thing, well how many 2hour movies do you own in HiDef? HD-DVD is the only commercial HiDef movies i think you can buy at the moment and so the length of the movie in Gb will be probably close to the disk capacity of HD-DVD (20Gb? 25Gb? not sure).
As for 'normal' DVDs, the disk capactiy is 4.7Gb, so you can see how heavily compressed that is. You'd only be able to fit 20mins of native-HDV footage onto a whole 4.7Gb DVD.

I saw an ad in the weekend paper for a Blue-Ray player.
That's about 2x the cost of the HD-DVD.

First DVD players weren't cheap, either. But fortunately there was only one Video-DVD format, so you did not risk buying something that might become useless in a couple of years.

I think when stand alone dvd recorders came out they were around $1000.

My first color TV was about $1,000 (1971?)
My first VCR was about $1,000 (1981?)
My first microwave oven was about $1,000 (I can't even remember)
My first CD writer was about $1,000 (1989?)
My first son came with a $5.25 hospital bill (1969)
I will wait a while for High Definition...
