Could anyone shed any light on whether the A1 is any better in lowlight than the HC1? If it is not I may hang on for one of the new Canon's due out in october.

pretty much identical except for when you use the 'Black Stretch' feature that the A1 has and the HC1 doesn't. This feature affects the Gamma curve for shadow areas and effectively gives more shadow detail in the A1 picture.
I think you will have to pay substantially more for a Canon A1. It's UK price is likely to be heading for double that of the Sony A1. Sony A1E is available for GBP1615 in the UK (for definite) and the Canon machine i think is likely to be close to GBP3000, at a guess. (always pay more for cams in UK than USA, and USA MSRP is $3999).
