I've recorded clips in 3 quality settings, LP, SP and XP , for comparison. (Stream copy from the actual files, no re-encodiing)

-------------------------------------------
file name : Panasonic_SDR-S100_set1.zip
file size : 9.53 MB

NTSC
4:3 ratio
handheld
low light
Auto mode
5 seconds

- Click "Free"
- Wait a few moment (30-60 seconds)
- Enter code to download
-------------------------------------------

IMO,
LP (VBR 2.5 Mbps or 313 KB/s) -> not sharp , visible artifacts
SP (VBR 5 Mbps or 625 KB/s) -> moderately sharp, low artifacts
XP (VBR 10 Mbps or 1250 KB/s) -> sharpest, unnoticeable artifacts

Now that's much better, thanks. I can live with that quality: SP, XP either of them.

You have your SDR-S100 set to output 4:3 NTSC, do you?

G A P
I bought SDR-S100 in the U.S. so it's the NTSC model. I've been shooting with 4:3 ratio to well fit my TV screen.

Your clips play very well on my HDTV through my Zensonic Z500. Sektionschef's widescreen PAL clips all play in a letterbox.

I'm seriously interested in the SDR S150 and would like to see some clips from it to asess the MPEG 2 quality. Am I right in thinking they will be the same as these from the 100?

i tried the lik but t says files deleted - is there any way to repost them for download again please....

thanks

It seems that Rapidshare delete the files in 1-2 weeks. It's advertised as 30 days of inactivity :(

I just re-uploaded the clips. However if the links are dead again, pls feel free to let me know. I'll be glad to reupload them.

I've not checked any clips from SDR-S150 or S200 yet. But I guess they shouldn't be different from SDR-S100 in vdo quality.

Here's another clips I took both MiniDV and MPEG2.

I downloaded them and burned a simple DVD using iDVD. I had to convert them to DV to be able to import them into the software, and then re-encode them to the DVD, so must have suffered some quality loss, but the resulting picture didnt look any worse than using the AVI clip from your earlier comparison footage.

When viewed on the computer screen using Quicktime, the XP MPEG footage was superb and better than what I saw from the AVI files - not sure if I am seeing some form of 'preview' quality or the real thing, but in the small screen window it was great.

I am stil struggling to understand the editing conventions, file formats etc, so GAP, could you confirm the footage you shot is at the highest quality, full screen size etc, so I can undertsnad what exactly I am seeing. I am slightly concerned that the footage you uploaded from the Pana GS70 looks worse on my screen than that of the SDR100, when i expected the opposite.

Thanks

As I checked, iDVD accepts only .DV file as input. I think you did the right way.

I just opened DV file with the latest Quicktime 7.1.3 on Windows. The video quality is horrible. I don't know why but I guess it uses its own DV codec. I suggest you to try RealPlayer http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/internet_utilities/realplayer.html This will significantly improve your viewing experience.

Hey bigpikle

If you get yourself a Network Media Player you can play files from your PC or NAS through the player to the TV. Then you'll be able to play native mpg files, though depending on what NMP you get you may have to convert the files from TS to PS or vice versa.

OTOH getting a good NMP isn't easy. I have tried four, sold them all but to be fair they would all play SD MPEG-2 PS files. I'm just about to try a modded XBox in the hope that this will play more file types.

I have about 8GB of video from the SDR-S150 all shot in SP, if you still want some samples.

I have a NAS (Buffalo Linkstation) which also serves my Sonos system :D
I have it linked to my hi-fi but it is audio only.

I really just want an easy way to edit mpeg2 with minimal quality loss. I just got my new iMac and had some fun creating a short film in iMovie over the weekend. If I can get mpeg2 footage into it as easily as possible and then edit it as a DV and output it to DVD, then I would be a happy guy! The 150 just seems to be what I'm after - small, silent, OIS, 3CCD, tapeless....

I would really like a sample I could play with please. Let me know how to get something if you dont mind. I could do with a clip of 20-30 seconds if possible, so I could create a few short clips and edit them together etc.

Thanks for your offer.
