View Full Version : HVR A1U XLR Help

saul
Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum. My name is Saul.
I would greatly appreciate it if someone can help me with this question.

I got my Sony HVR A1U for over couple of months now... what I’ve notice for the XLR input, when I plug in input 1 and 2 I only get mono sound meaning input 1 sound on left channel only and input 2 sound on the right channel only.

I thought 2 xlr input meaning that you can hear sound from left and right CH coming from each of the input 1 and 2.

I mess around with all the adjustment and setting trying to get left and right sounds coming from each of the input. Still no go.

Please help.

Thanks

Saul

No, it cannot record two stereo tracks. that would mean it is recording FOUR channels and it can't do that.
Almost all camcorders are 2-track audio recorders only. When you use the internal stereo mic, it records one track on left channel and one track on right channel.

When you use the XLR module, you can record from TWO mics at the same time (for example a shotgun mic on-camera and a radio lavalier mic planted on someone) but both of these mics are MONO. In fact about 80-90% of external mics are mono. Shotguns are all mono, most hypercardiods are mono, lavaliers are (almost) always mono.

So however clever the XLR module was, it couldnt record 4 tracks (2 tracks, both stereo) because the HDV spec recording onto MiniDV tapes doesn't allow for anything more than 2 track audio recording.
