View Full Version : Need Help Choosing a Hood/Filter

ProjectCamaro
Ok I have just a GS150 and am about to do a lot of outdoor shooting. I was wondering what type of filter(including company) I should get and what hood. I don't know how to tell if the lens and hood will fit my camcorder so any help you can give would be great.
Thanks guys.

Oh and if you could include links to where I can buy them that would be even better.

Thanks again.

For normal outdoor shooting nothing more than a UV filter to protect your lens should be needed. A circular polarizer filter will help cut glare if your shoot on water or snow. It can also help deepen the sky color and bring out the clouds the same way polarized sunglasses do.

For hoods you have a couple of choices. You can try to find one with the same size threads as your filters or maybe get a large one and use a stepup ring. Don't go smaller. The other choice is a snap on hood that is held by friction around the outside of the lens like this (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=90027&is=REG&addedTroughType=search).

I usually shop for stuff like this at B&H. Or maybe try a local shop if you have one.

Good luck.

Thank you for your response and help it's really apprecaited.

Ok so the hood you linked to will fit fine then?

So then if I buy a filter made for my GS150 I won't have to worry about it not fitting correctly because of the hood right?

Again thanks for your help :D

Oh, I didn't say that! The one I linked to was an example. You'll have to check the size of your lens barrel and the sizes supported by that one.

If you buy a filter that is the same size as your lens, you won't have any problem with a snap on hood if it fits the lens barrel. In other words, the filter won't be any larger than the lens so it won't get in the way.

If you buy a larger filter and adapt it with a step up ring then a snap on might be a problem. In that case a screw on hood might be a better choice. B&H has some collapsible rubber screw on modelss that will work. It all depends on the size of the filter and lens barrel.

Again thanks for your help :D
OK.

Good luck.

Ok my lens says 37mm on one side and 2.45-24.5mm on the other side. Does this mean I get a hood that's made to fit 37mm and I'll be good?

So what about something like this - http://cgi.ebay.com/37mm-lens-hood-UV-filter-Digital-Video-DV-Camcorder-NEW_W0QQitemZ110029247173QQihZ001QQcategoryZ64329QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Or how about this hood? - http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-ANGELA-VIDEO-LENS-HOOD-for-37mm-WITH-FRONT-CAP_W0QQitemZ260027400958QQihZ016QQcategoryZ64329QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The 37mm is the filter size or the diameter of the threaded opening on your lens. It looks like both of those would fit fine. (The 2.45-24.5 is the focal length of the zoom lens, 2.45 at full wide setting and 24.5 at full tele. In other words, it's a 10x zoom.)

I don't see any lens diameters mentioned on the Hama hood I linked to below other than the 52mm hood opening. You'd need to measure the outside diameter of your lens barrel to see if it's close to 52mm. This hood attaches by gently squeezing the outside of the lens so it might fit a little smaller lens than 52mm. But I wouldn't think it would go too much smaller.

Good luck.

Awesome thank you. If I remember my highschool math 52mm would be barely over two inches.

Thank you for all your time, it's really apprecaited and helpful.
