View Full Version : Firewire
Deadcat
Hey could someone who uses a firewire please tell me how they capture their video into their CPU. My editing software isn't seeing it, and my computer regcognizes it every so often, but not everytime for some reason. So any help would be great thanks

tell us what you are using, computer, software, etc...

I'm using a home built PC, Pinnacle 9.0, and a DC cable.

No idea what a DC cable is unless you mean the power supply cable.
When you plug the firewire cable into the computer and then the camcorder does a small icon appear in the bottom right corner of the monitor? If so, the computer now 'sees' the camcorder and your software should too, if the computer does not see the camcorder when you plug it in, the software will not either. Normally when you plug it in you'll hear a beep when the plug in play part of the operating system recognizes a new piece of hardware.
If it is not seeing it you might have a firewire cable or port on your computer. Is the firewire port built into the motherboard or on a seperate card?
Do you know someone else that has a camcorder with firewire that you can try out? Might just need to do a process of elimination to track it down.

What OS are you using? XP?
If your Firewire port is on the MoBo and not attached via PCI card, you should be able to see the camera pop up as an icon in the system tray (right lower corner) as soon as you turn on the camera. Connect camera via firewire to PC, turn on camera, it should trigger the device manager to see the device (camera) and ask you for an application assignement. It may also ask you to install drivers.
If your firewire is via PCI card (fire wire card that pushes into a motherboard slot, then you may have to install drivers for that card before it will work properly. I had this issue with a previous PC (I also home build my own PCs). I currently use two Small Form Factor PCs where the FireWire is a MoBo port and when I turn on the connected camera, my pre-selected software opens up right away and ready to capture.
Best of luck!

Hi
I too am having problems in connecting to my PC to the DVC.
DVC ... Panasonic NV-GS11
Under menu "AV IN/OUT" have set DV OUT = ON
PC ... New PC using XP
Software = VideoStudio V8 & then V9
Error = Either no video capture driver is installed in this system or no device is connected
Have just replaced an earlier 1394 card with new PCI one
(card shows up under Control Panel/Hardware as OK, and also tried reinstalling drivers)
From the earlier post I note that I should see an icon on the toolbar ???? I dont see it, any ideas ??? only thing I can think of is a problem with the DV output on the camera unless my settings are wrong.
(I have also tried on 2 different PCs)
Many thanks
Phil

I'll take a stab at this but I think it's the settings on your camera that are set wrong.
Under menu "AV IN/OUT" have set DV OUT = ON have you tried it "off"?
My cameras that have AV IN/OUT only use that for when you're passing through analog signals. If you're connected via firewire to the PC. For example, with Premiere 6.5, As soon as you connect the camera to the firewire cable, the PC should automatically pick up that a new device is connected to the PC and will ask you what software to launch. Launching Premiere, you then have it capture your video and the software controls the camera (FF, reverse, play etc)
At work here I've been playing with the Pinnacle Studio V8, a slim square shaped device that sits on a corner edge stand and plugs to the PC via USB. Attaching a camera to this device would require the use of AV cable (with a mini jack at one end with 3 RCA jacks at the other end) to make it work. The AV cable sends the signal to the box which then sends it to the PC via USB2. We're using it for converting VHS to DVD.
Based on that alone, I think perhaps you might have things hooked up and setup wrong..
The other thing to try is to startup MS MovieMaker and see if it 'sees' the video camera...
Does any of this sound close to what you're doing or have you sorted it all out yet?
