I want to continue the Theme Based Videos thread started by TurtleTone, I'm starting this new one because the original is giving me issues trying to access the last page, so I thought why not start up a new thread? Anyhow feel free to post any videos even if your not participating the the Theme Based Videos.
I'll have to tell you since I received my new Mac, I've been wanting to participate on this forum for so long but school has really bogged down any chance of videoing or editing. Well I had a few hours tonight due to Thanksgiving break and I took advantage of it. I was fairly impressed with the DVC30 in a whole new light! Watch the video and tell me what you think! All comments welcome.

Like you, I was totally impressed recently with this camera's ability to function in low light and still hold a smooth video. However, I'm still too shy to show my lack of artistic abilities to the public but I'm working on it.. But like my photography, this is something I'm working on..
I'm slowly learning the subtleties of presentation from viewer the works of others.. Like your video.. well done.. Nice DOF!
TurtleTone2
cool video, good choice of music to go with it. You should change the topic to, "Low Light Theme videos". Tell us what your backdrop was against the candle. did you crush the blacks to seperate the background more from the candle?
I think we should start a new thread for each theme, that way it'll keep it from getting too long and hard to hunt through the thread.
It's been hell trying to get golden hour for me. I swear everytime I have time to grab my camera and go shoot something, It's raining or about to rain or just finished raining.
Maybe the lowlight one I'll be able to do quicker as it's not weather dependent.
Seaking: The point of these is not a competition. It's to stretch your legs a bit and shoot something that you might not otherwise and learn from it and others. doesn't have to be a masterpiece, could be just experimenting and showing.
3CCD
Well I'm glad you guys thought it was interesting, as for the blacks, all I did was turn the lights off and adjust the iris and shutter speed to the highest it could go but still retain a bright enough picture. In scene files, I turned up chroma, put the Master Ped at around -5 which helps with the blacks, and turned the AE to a negative number as well, not sure how much but nothing more than -2 I think. I also turned the detail to -2 I believe since this was a low light shoot. I hope this answers some of your questions TurtleTone. Have a good holiday everyone!

I hear ya.. I'm usually out of position or out on the bike at that time.. well not anymore since its getting quite cold up here ;)

Point taken.. if I get some spare time tonight I'll give it a try for sure.. A friend of mine wants me to photo/video his trick lights on his bike.. tonight might the time to play with that. I'll let you know how it goes.

Here's an early morning session (low light) from a project I am doing on Georgia Rivers.
http://media.putfile.com/Chattahoochee-River
The file is about 25mb which is the limit on putfile so please excuse the low bitrate I had to use for encoding. Some scenes were shot with aperature wide-open.

Hi Mark and everyone
You are doing the kind of films that I never have time to do! I really liked the Chattahootchee River film.
The following is my personal oppinion and not ment to be rude or offend you:
One ting that I noticed was that with that slow tempo in the music I think that the film would be even more magic if you slow down the pace between the clips. What I mean is that the clips can be longer, perhaps twice as long, at least during the end of the film. With longer clips the viewer will have more time to concentrate on each clip instead of rapidly move over to the next one. I'm aware that this is my personal oppinion and that others might like it the way it is. (If you make the clips longer you will also be able to make a longer film or perhaps two with the same material :-) )
Kind regards, keep on the good work!
/Bo
Mark Williams
That's a very good observation. Several people have made the same comment and it is something I am going to work on. The use of short scenes for nature videos come from training and projects I worked on many years ago where the "rule" was never keep a scene/slide on the screen for more than 5-8 seconds or else your audience will get bored. What I am hearing now is people want to savor/enjoy/explore visually what they are looking at. Since most of the stuff I shoot is slow paced the trick is to find the "sweet" spot that is just long enough but not too long and this is what I am finding difficult to achieve.
Anyway, thanks for the comments. It is very helpful.

Mark

One of the great things of watching other people's work and learning, are the comments from other skilled people. We all see the same things in a different light.
I read your comments, viewed the video and read your comments again. I can see what you're saying about the pacing of the clips, and yes, it makes sense. However, to my eye, the pacing was good for my attention span and enjoyment of viewing one heck of a nice river video.
A little bit of both, faster/slower and your target audience changes. Personally, and I am no one to speak here, if this video had been drawn out more, I wouldn't have finished watching it. But the pace, music and scenes kept me interested enough to watch it through. And enjoyed it too! =)
I went out to shoot this morning to capture some sea smoke but got caught in the rain and had to run helter skelter to save the camera from the torrential downpour..
Tomorrow is another day!

As always excellent work. I agree with both Bov3 and Seaking on their obsevations of your clip. I think to show us a peak at your work, your pacing was just fine, I really enjoyed it. The geese coming down the river with the steam following them was very nice. If you decide to use some of this video in one of your DVDs, then I would have to follow Bov3's view and ask for more to each clip. I wish I had time to go out and shoot like that, I always get into Discovery HD and INHD when they do nature shows. Keep up the good work, it gives me something to shoot for.

Mark, Some very cool shots. As for some of the comments about timing, It's all very subjective to me. I thought it was the music that needed to match the shots more. It seemed like the shots were more dramatic and powerful than the music. If the music matched to the shots you have, then I think you could more choices of timing.
the steam coming of the river looked very cool.
3CCD: get the flip for mac plugin for quicktime. I think their free plugin will allow you to play any windows media format in quicktime. I have the pro plugin and it also allows you to export windows media format from quicktime too. If you go to the apple website, you can find plugin's for quicktime that will play all the formats right in quicktime.

well finally here is my Golden Hour. I shot it a hour tonight and threw it together. The video has no colour correction. The settings are the same in each shot, the only difference is changing lens' on the letus adapter. I uploaded it as 640 but it seems to only playback as 320 in a browser, not sure why.
http://media.putfile.com/goldenhour
TurtleTone2
I just looked at the file on putfile and it sure looks a lot darker than before. Compression and size darkened it considerably.
Juanillo
Turtle it does look dark. I was going to comment on that, but then I read your post.
TurtleTone2
yeah, it's really wierd. it also has funky shakey lines in the video too that weren't there. I think I screwed something up in the conversion. I'll export it again tonight and try it on my server instead of putfile.
marques
as already stated i couldnt see much of it. One thing i have noticed is that your videos combine well with the audio. for example there is a very deliberate wipe with exactly the sound same effect which is brilliant and the overall tempo is also well suited.
i have noticed that in everyones video i have seen, the largest proportion of clips are actually stills which contradicts my understanding of video. Isn't video meant to represent motion?
Can anyone help me to get some clarity on this point.
i also wanted to upload video but when i converted the video it was full of artifacts (i think that is the right word, general bluriness that wasn't there before). what is the reason for this.
TurtleTone2
Ok, new version of the same thing Here.
http://www.turtletonestudio.com/films/goldenhour.html
not sure why the small version was so dark, I ment it to be dark but not that dark. you think you get the hang of compression only to be stumped all of the time.
I think the reason why so many things are stills is that they are easier to control. You can play with the framing, focus, lighting, etc... and they don't move or get bored. The moment you get moving things in the picture, you have many variables to contend with. As I get better, I try to get more things moving including the camera. I really love when a camera moves through space but I also find it hard to do well.
TurtleTone2
On another note, my remote died. No idea why. Tried new batteries and even tried to solder in a new LED but nothing. So I ordered one from Pany, $12. Should have done that to begin with, would have saved me 3 hours trying to fix the broken one.
TurtleTone2
Mark, I was watching your video again and was impressed with how smooth your panning is. do you attribute that to your head or steady hand?

TT2 I agree with you his pans are very smooth. Yours were not bad either. I find if i adjust the tension too loose the pans are smooth but too fast. Tighten up the tension a little and its seems like it catchs in spots. The up down aways seems to be desent and a lot easier to do.

Hi
I haven't had time yet to finish the Golden hour film. I've done some filming but here up north in Sweden this time of year the sun is up between 9AM and 2:30PM. If it's a cloudy day it's too dark to film and in November there is by default cold, clouds and rain/snow here.
I'm impressed by your short films and I find it very interesting that we all seem to live in totaly different environments and we all have different kind of film ideas.
About panning, I tried somthing I read somewhere here in this forum. In my trees film I used a rubber band to get really slow and controlled pannings/movement of the tripod head. Using the cams zoom at full tele I find it very hard to move the cam smoothly. The smallest shake of the hand or if I don't press/drag the handle with exact power troughout the whole movement will immediately affect the end result. I tried to adjust the drag on the tripod head and then used a rubber band which I hooked up on the handle. By pulling the rubber band I ended up with much smoother movements, especially for the start and stop points. It took a little training but the end result was worth it.
I have a Manfrotto tripod with a 700RC2 head, but will probably upgrade to a 701RC2 in the future.

Hi Mark, what advantages does QT Pro give over WMV formats? I remember back in the day when a lot of people were using QT and then switched over to WMV.. In my line, I need quality / size ratios that make it worth while for people to download our videos. Usually a 50 minute video at around 300 megs is acceptable to them. (720X640)..
I'm always open to new ideas to improve product quality but hate going through all the 'try this try that' process. Simply too busy..

LOL gees now THAT explains what the videographer was doing at the park with his rig LOL.. We were out doing photosets and watched this gentleman gingerly pull at a large rubber band on his video head handle like it was going to snap back and bite him.. gingerly like.. very very careful like.. Nice idea, now that I know what that was all about lol..

Hi guys. Sorry I haven't gotten back with you all but I have been out of town. As far as pan smoothnees it seems to me to be a function of equipment and skill to make up for equipment limitations. I use a Manofrotto 501 head (not the best but all I can afford at the momment). I try to have as steady a hand as possible and redo the shot many times till I am satisfied. I have heard of the rubber band trick but have never tried it. I have used a borrowed high-end Miller head once $$$ and it gave consistent excellent results, so equipment does make a difference.
As far as using quicktime over Window Media Encoder I don't yet know which gives the best results as I have only used WME but I am going to find out. A lot of excellent Quicktime video clips on the web look smooth, crisp, color accurate and with few artifacts. For an example look at:

Gah don't be saying that now, lol. I just purchased a 501 head as the next affordable fluid head wasn't affordable! ouch these things are pricey.. In a week's time we might be in a very mild spell of weather and I plan to go do some outdoor filming to try my hand at a golden hour video at an interesting location I was shooting photos at last weekend. I'm taking a break from my regular web work to get out and play and have fun.. I hope it comes out OK

Now that Snoqualine film was nice. I was watching the fades, especially when looking up a tree and the wipe was smooth (effortless) as it went into another tree.. it took me a sec to realize it was actually a different tree all together hehe.. I like that.. Nice score.
And what really sucks about all this, is that I hate nature films.. boring as heck.. You have no idea how many 'nature flicks' I've viewed these past few weeks and then truely appreciated =) I hate that hehe. Someone made me appreciate nature films without me noticing.
Mark Williams
Ah, a new convert. Nature stuff seems to be a very narrow segment of the hobby/business world. I guess what got me into it was the 30 years of hiking, camping and fishing along with thousands of 35mm slides I took and the thrill of what was over the next hill or around the next bend of the river. I can't recall how many times I've gone back to the same spot just to capture the best lighting, best fall leaf color or spent hours in a blind videoing birds. Not everyone can or needs to appreciate that feeling as it is somewhat a personal thing for me and it brings me alot of satisfaction. Its like capturing a perfect moment in time which can be visual poetry. Although don't get me wrong, it is rewarding when someone likes your work and gives a compliment.
My favorite nature videographer is Steve Dempsey of Pine Lake Films which is the link I gave you earlier. Most of his site is down now while he finishes his Yellowstone project but he had over a dozen video projects posted, each of which I have learned from. I think his camera and editing skills are superb.
I've never really been interested in doing videos that involve actors, storylines etc., but I do appreciate thier complexity and am in awe of the effort that goes into thier production. It is much much more involved than what I do.
"Seaking", don't dispair the 501 head will serve you well, just practice, practice, practice.

Mark, I am with you, I love to take nature shots over film with actors. Except for movies with the kids. Steve Dempsey is the man, I can't wait to see his new stuff with the Canon H1 HD camera he just picked up.

Bov,
I viewed the video and really enjoyed it. The MX500 seemed to have performed well for you. Although I didn't understand a word anyone was saying, I got the jest of most of it. Beautiful countryside. Those mosquitos look like they really tormented your group. Reminds me of a trip I made to the state of Michigan, USA one summer. I was suprised to see one of the guys fishing with a pole and no reel on a small stream. Here in Georgia we fish for trout on small streams in the mountains mostly with ultra-light short rods and spinning reels using 2lb. test line and very small 1/32oz. lures.
This was a very nice momento of your trip. It held my interest all the way thru. I liked the B&W photos of the group at the beginning, the use of titles as you went from day to day and your camera work was very good. The scenic shots and close ups of the flora were also good. Now that you have your DVC30 I bet you would like to do it all over again.

Yeah no kidding, I can see why you follow his work, that one clip was really impressive. I find myself trying to emmulate someone else's work, to see how they did it, and then put my own flavour in my own work.

I think that's probably why I'm always looking at nature scenes when I'm out biking lately.. "Ahh that would make a cool shot, Hmm betcha if I came here at sunset/sunrise I could get a 'golden hour' theme started too" Only because it's so different from what I always do. More challenging as I'm simply not used to doing these projects. Though I have to admit, I suck at it but at least I'm seeing what and why it sucks when I'm looking at it, after seeing other people's work on here. It's a fun learning process. And though I haven't posted anything I want to show yet, I am learning and getting better at it. I should hopefully have something up soon.

The 501 arrived yesterday and wow, nice. I played with it last night and it's not all that hard to get used to. I already have my heavy duty rubber band wrapped around the handle for when I might need it.
Now JUST waiting for the weather to cooperate.. it's bouncing all over the place these past few days.. GAH

My only regret in my video life is that I started off with a Canon ZR40 when I was deployed at sea with the Navy (I was Airforce at the time, attached posted for the visit to some Gulf party in 02/03).
I managed to shoot a lot of exciting footage, especially while operating in the North Atlantic storms, conducting helo and RAS ops.
I sit back wishing I had either the Optura XI or now, the DVC30 as I could have gotten some excellent quality vids.
But the positive side of things is that my editing skills have gotten so much better, I have a better understanding on how to present it better than I hope to be able to redo my video presentations later. Better appreciation for timing, soundtrack and presentation.
Ever see someone on a large ship walk sideways, feet on the deck but hand on the deck also for balance? 50' rolls were impressive in these storms, ships flying out of the water.. scary!
I should get to that project soon, the tapes are 3 or 4 years old..

That was a fun video to watch, brings back that we're all the same everywhere.. buddies, fishing, 'shine'.. hehe.. But the Golden Hour segment was nice.
As an aside, the mosquito scenes really annoyed the heck out of me. I am one of those people who could show up at a nudist colony in a wetsuit and still be the one who ends up with the most bites, hence I never go out into the woods anymore, its just too painful. While watching your video with the "skeeters" flying around the camera, I noticed the audio was good enough that it picks up the flying insects going from side to side of the mic.. so much so my wife noticed me turning my head side to side as if to avoid a skeeter strike LOL.. (headphones on)..
Nice intro section as well.. nicely done.. 2,001 ideas can be learned here.. =)

Can't remember if I linked these before, but here are some video's I did of a live show at a small club for some friends. I rented one vx2100 and I used my DVC30 and cut between the two cameras. It was pretty difficult to match the 2 cameras I have to say and I don't think I quite got there in the end. To be honest I had no idea what I was doing, Just thought it would be a fun challenge. I think this was done about a year ago, maybe longer, and I really didn't know what I was doing with the camera or how to set it up. I do know I shot in squeeze and 1/30 shutter on the DVC30. I had a wide angle adapter on the camera too. The VX2100 was operated by someone I grabbed at the gig so we didn't really know what each other or what we were going to do, just kind of winged it.

In the 2nd one, you can spot me with my camera on the stage hiding behind an amplifier. hahaha
Even though there were stage lights, I had a pretty hard time trying to focus. I had to use manual focus because the autofocus on the camera wasn't behaving under these conditions. It's pretty hard to focus some of the shots through the viewfinder on the fly sitting in front of amplifiers blasting. There were a few times that I was in front of the PA's where the low end was so loud that it shook the OIS in the camera.
Mark Williams
Looked pretty good. I wouldn't have guessed that this was your first gig. Video flowed well with only a few similar shots of the keyboard guy. Would have liked to seen more closeups of the singer. Audio was pretty clean. Were you plugged into thier mixer? All in all I think you did a good job. Since this is a year old you should take another shot at it since you now have the benefit of more experience.

Hi
Thank's for your positive responses to my Fishing film. As you see it's more of a documentary than a real film. I just carried the camcorder together with my fishing equipment. I could have used a tripod but that would have made my own fishing more difficult (more to carry). Especially the last sequence is too shaky and also suffers from video noise as the MX500 is really bad in low light.
I will try to make more of these kind of films in the future. It's really appreciated by my friends and a very nice saved memories.
A thing that is good with the MX500 is the internal mic as you can hear in the film. I used the internal mic for the whole film. One of my friends, who also hates mosquitos, looked at the film and listened to the sound in his earphones, and he also started to wave with his hands to get rid of the insects.
I wished the internal mic on the DVC30 was that good!
The fishing poles are quite common here in sweden. It's mostly used in small rivers and small strams for trout fishing. Is just the rod, some kind of weight, a hook and worms to the fish. I myself prefer either my ultra light rod/reel or my fly fishing equipment.

Yes it would be nice if the DVC30 had a better internal mic. Anyone using DVC30 should first get an external mic as the 1st add-on.
I didn't go with a the XLR mic setup since you get mono audio and loose the DVC30's audio level control. I bought the Audio-Technica PRO24 stereo mic which gives me stereo and audio level control on the DVC30. The audio quality is superb!
A couple of things with the PRO24 mic, it has a 6 foot cord. The cam shop I bought it from shorten the cord to 13 inches. The mic holder that came with PRO24 is poor captures handling noise. I bought the Sennheiser MZS 6 Shock Mount to remove the handling noise and the stereo audio is just great.

I just finished doing an edit with two camera, the DVC30 and the OpturaXI and didn't know how to do this edit with Premier 6.5 but it turned out reasonably well (for what we do anywa).. I basically lined up the audio tracks and went from there, clipping snipping and melding away and yeah, it flowed nicely from one camera to the other, though the WB were different (oops). I'm sure there's an easier way of doing but we're only talking about 10 mins worth of back and forth. I should someday pick up the manual and learn how to use this properly..
In the 2nd one, you can spot me with my camera on the stage hiding behind an amplifier. hahaha
And there I was thinking it was a blemish on the video
The colours, softness were nice in the clip I looked at, though unable to tell about the audio due to the POS pc I have to use at work, I'll check it out when I get home tonight. Nicely done..

Angelo,
I use the stero Pro24 also to capture ambient background sound. I is a pretty good mic for this purpose and price range.

I took out my camcorder for a quick shoot for a Christmas electronic video card. I thought I would make something my parents could send to family members by e-mail and do something a little different. So here it is, the electronic christmas video card.

well finally here is my Golden Hour. I shot it a hour tonight and threw it together. The video has no colour correction. The settings are the same in each shot, the only difference is changing lens' on the letus adapter. I uploaded it as 640 but it seems to only playback as 320 in a browser, not sure why.

Oh my goodness! I haven't been on this forum in who knows how long!!
Very nice clip!
I've owned the dvc30 for a few months now and haven't really taken full advantage of it. You guys are just motivating me to go out there and just make a video and use it for what it was made for.
I'll post some new clips as soon as I can...
Happy Holidays everybody!

Thanks for the advice Angelo, I was going to get the rode video mic now I'm stuck between what you have and the Rode.

Ah, nice car video which brought back memories. Many years ago when I was 17, a friend of mine with a very modified Porsche 911-S took me for a ride on a closed section of interstate under construction. When he hit 150 mph and the dashed white lines turned to one solid looking line I decided that's as fast as I ever want to go in a car. The scary thing was the Porsche had about another 15 mph to go before it would have reached its top end.
Merry Christmas,
Mark

Went to the Great Swamp and thought I would enjoy the outdoors and shoot a little video. Absolute gorgeous day and the temperature was just right. Here's something a little something from this evening.

Happy New Year Everyone. Haven't been around here in a bit, but I did manage to shoot a little short for the DVC competition. Theme was "memories". 3 min and 1 week to write, shoot, edit, and score. Has a fair amount of golden hour in it. all the footage was shot in one day.

WOW! Extremely well done! You had me entertained the whole time. Every shot was incredibly still, smooth pans, great angles, crisp clear audio, great choice of music. I just have two questions. Did you use any lavier mics? And how about that running shot through the woods? I was going to say did you use a boom/jib but its moving so fast and smooth it couldn't have been. Did you rig a cable and pulley system suspended in air lol? Anyways thanks for sharing I thoroughly enjoyed it!
TurtleTone2
3CCD, thanks.
Yes I used one wireless lav and one shotgun on a boom pole. I just mixed between the two depending on what worked best for each shot.
The shot in the woods is a cable cam thingy I made. I strung about 150 feet of steel cable between trees. Then I bolted a board to a modified flowpod so that it would balance and take a lot of the movement out. the whole rig moved on pulley wheels and gravity. It was moving pretty fast as you can see. I had a tough time keeping up with it so it wouldn't crash into the tree at the end. hahahah.

Good stuff, it definitely paid off b/c those shots came out wonderful.

I haven't been here for about a week so I am catching up. Just viewed Goldenhour 50 and Memories. I enjoyed both of them. Goldenhour was very impressionistic looking and I really liked your use of disolves and reflections. Memories was good story telling, great camera work and audio and really funny as all get out. Great quicktime encoding. I just got the quicktime pro encoder this weekend and it seems to be much cleaner with smaller file sizes than windows media player 9. I am debating on switching all my video clips on my website to quicktime.
Regards.

I burned a few videos to DVD, one being my golden hour and I'm blown away. I put it on a rear projection 60" Sony HDTV and I couldn't believe how well it looked. Looked great on my standard CRT TV so I really thrilled. I absolutely love this camcorder. Panasonic please make and AG-DVC30HD camcorder in the next 1-2 years lol!

I want to say thanks to all who contributed videos. I have been trying to figure out if I wanted a dvc30 or a dvx100 and after watching these clips, particularly Yellowstone ( which is the type of work I enjoy the most ) I can see it will take me years to even approach the capabilities of the dvc30.
All of these are just outstanding, now I have to find a really good price on one, lol.

Wow, that was nice. Its been about 30 years since I heard that Led Zepplin song. I really liked the transition from B&W to color. It was unexpected. Good use of disolves.

Nice! The transition from B&W to Colour was nicely done. Going from the grey dull feet on the ground mode to the colourful "free life of wings in the air" is as much visual as emotional response as the aircraft went wheels up. I did something similar with a biker video when we were momentarily stuck in traffic during an excellent ride.. But not as well as how you did it ; )
Thanks once again for sharing.

Hey thanks so much for the kind words and feed back, I was originally going to go with an all color version but a few of the shots didn't come out as nice so I thought I would go with some b/w in the beginning. Hope to share more in the future...
