View Full Version : Quick Time Pro & QT videos
Seaking
Ok, so there I am with the new PC I built and loading up the software, when it came time to loadup the QT player it asked if I wanted to go to Pro for $30.. Hmm read the pitch on their site and says "capture/convert to QT using new codec for stunning video online etc" (or words to that effect). So what the heck, everyone's using QT for quality and it's multiplatform etc.
However, all I ended up with is a QT player (Pro 7 for PC) without the popups.. ouch, that was 30 bucks worth? Does this thing actually capture or convert or did I spend 30 bucks to remove an annoying popup?
I'd like to try out QT as a format for my submissions but not getting any luck finding anything to convert the uncompressed AVI to QT. I've never tried this in the 4 years of video work, now's the time to learn I guess..?

I think that all you can do is capture like a webcam, not capture your tapes. It's not an editing app. What I use it for is to quickly convert my edited projects to different sizes/quality/formats. When I use Final Cut (I'm on a 1GHz G4 Mac with 1GB RAM), when I export out the final .mov file it turns my computer into a slow, mushy do-nothing. Using other programs is nearly impossible. If I just output a reference movie, however, it takes a few seconds, and then I feed that into QT Pro and set it to export the kind of file I want. It does it much faster than FC and doesn't hog the memory or processing power and slow down other programs.
For that, QTPro is useful, and for stringing together mobile phone movies into one file.

QuickTime is the H.264 MPEG4 (.MOV .MP4 .MPV) format. Several people, including myself have had difficulties encoding to .MOV with Sony Vegas 5. The option is there, however the encoded file ends up being about 5 times larger than DV AVI, so that seems to not be an option. Upgrading to the "Pro" version is said to allow proper encoding, but I have not personally tried it. For small compatable video files for playback on computer I just continue to encode to Microsoft .WMV format.
Here is one possible option: http://www.cwol.com/ipod-accessories/instant-video-to-go-ads.htm There are some other solutions like the Main Concept encoder which was $495 last time I looked.
Others will of course have different opinions and experiences.

Premiere 6.5 but never looked at the possibility of it having the capacity to covert directly. My work flow is such that I export to Tape (for archives) a finished AVI which I also convert to WMV and then to
DVD format for burning to DVD. I certainly don't want to get into another run of encoding at Premiere.. yet.

Worse case scenario is that I also have an Archos AV500 digital recording device that automatically saves video files to DivX video..
Still working with the new PC so I'm going to have to try various ways to get this done better and more efficiently.
