Yes, I'm a newbie, and I need some help!

I just got a GL1 that came with a Sennheiser uni-directional mic that works when off the camera. The problem is that it won't work when on the hot shoe. How do I get it to work? I'm sure it's simple.

Which model Sennheiser? Maybe the MKE 300? Does it have the 1/8" miniplug jack or?
