You would get more info on this in the Digital8 thread section. But if i may answer myself, i would have to say that you are stuck with the internal mic, since the TRV280 doesn't have any mic inputs or hot or cold shoes!

I moved this thread into the D8 forum. I agree with Camcorder93, there is nothing you can do to add an external mic to this camcorder. The camcorder must have a hot shoe or an external mic jack to do that. Sony removed the external mic jack from new D8 models several years ago. I think it was part of the master plan to kill off the Digital8 line which they did at the end of 2005.
All of my 4 Digital8 camcorders have external mic jacks but they were made in 1999, 2000 & 2001. If you can read Ira's spread sheet at the top of this forum it should tell you what models have external mic jacks.
I think it is also a general trend in recent years to remove external mic jacks from low priced consumer camcorders. I guess not enough people use them to justify the cost. That also forces you to buy higher priced camcorders if you need an external mic jack.

EVIL I TELL YOU! I have to admit that although the D8s were bigger, they had WAY more features and really good manual control and awesome quality! I love my DCR-TRV310! Huge 3.5 screen, 1/4 CCD, Focus Rings, Backword capability, access. shoe, mic input, and SO MUCH MORE! The 2005 series is horrible!
