I think it's just about time to start another theme. I think since winter is coming upon us, A snow theme might be cool. No time limit on this, other than the end of snow. It's like 60 here in NYC so we haven't seen snow yet and probably won't for the next few weeks. But I'm ready for when it starts to come down. again, no rules other than it has to have snow in it and shot on a DVC30.

Great topic. Although I'll be back in Florida by January 7th, I'll keep the theme in mind and shoot something along the lines...

How about snow and or ice? I just got back from a 14 degree trip to a partially frozen waterfall a couple of weeks ago in north Georgia.

Ice counts, as long as it's outside of a drink. I'd also like to hear how you thought the camera held up in that kind of cold, or if you had to do anything special like a bag.
Mark Williams
The cold was really hard on the batteries that day. I kept the cam inside a second oversized fleece jacket I was wearing when I could and kept the second battery in my pants pocket. But the most I could get out of a battery was about 15 minutes before it had to go back into my pocket to warm up.
There are some adhesive heat packs at our local drug store you crush and they warm up that I might try next time.
Will try to post a video soon.

Mark

think there will be any snowfall soon in nyc? the weathers been warmer than past years. As much as i can remember.

Yeah its unfortunate but I bet you will get some snow fall. Not sure if it will stick since it takes a solid week or two of freezing temperatures to freeze the ground but I bet you something will roll through. I'm calling March as a definite, those good ol' nor'easters.
encity5
march is so far :(
TurtleTone2
It's supposed to be 70 here on Sat. no snow this week, hahahah.

Here is my ice waterfall video. But first some background. It rarely snows in Northern Georgia. When it does it is usually less than an inch or two. The last good snowfall we had was in 1993 when it snowed 14 inches. The funny thing is it doesn’t matter if snows only an inch the area goes into gridlock. So unless you can get some good shots at home, forget it. We have little snow moving equipment plus no winter driving skills. Usually the authorities just close all the State roads until it all melts.
Anyway, it does get cold here and this was shot several weeks ago in the mountains when it got down to 14 degrees. Today it is 62 degrees. This is a 25mb file so it will take a while to load up.

Very cool. did look quite cold there. I think some of the angles were very cool. On the quicktime compression, If you select "prepare for internet streaming" and then select fast compressed header, it'll start playing before it's fully downloaded so you don't have to wait for the whole thing to download before you can watch it.
did you try any slow motion stuff with this video? I have a script for mac that works pretty good. first you deinterlace one field, and export the frames as pictures, then you deinterlace the other field and export those as pictures, then then script compiles all of the picts into a movie alternating one pic one field, another pic another field. This gives a really nice 50% slow motion movie.
I can't wait for it to snow to shoot some video, but then it has to go right back to 70 degrees afterwards, hahaha.
Mark Williams
Thanks for the advice on Quicktime compression. I just got it last week and have a bit to learn. I will try re-encoding latter today and re-post the clip in a more user friendly format. Have not tried any post-slow motion except stretching the clip on the Premiere 6.5 timeline. But it didn't look that good. I would love to get my hands on an HVX 200 to do slow-mo in camera.
Thanks,
Mark
TurtleTone2
Slow Mo in camera would be sweet. But I would try to do a search for a PC script that doubles the length by using alternating fields. I thought it looked pretty good. I found the mac script on DVI, might have a PC script too, just wasn't looking for it.
I was always pretty concerned with taking my camera out in really really cold weather. But 14 degrees looks like it's not too much of an issue. I thought the tape would be more of an issue in the cold, didn't even think about the batteries.

Revised link to ice waterfall below. Turtle Tone, I used your recommended settings. It seems to load faster. But I am not sure it will load up as you described on putfile.

hmm, doesn't seem to load any differently.

Kind of took a few minutes to load but I enjoyed it. Although the internet kills all video with compression, looks like some solid clean video. Thanks for sharing.

Here is a windows media player version that is more user friendly. I believe putfile may be better optimized for WMP than Quicktime as far as loading up.

The WMP version did load a little quicker but to me the WMP video was much sharper then the quicktime. The QT looked like a dream sequence. Nice video, did you have a hard time scaling the rocks to shoot. I really like the water dropping off rhe ice sickle with the backrgound out of focus

No problem getting up to the waterfall. I was a good paved trail most of the way with an observation deck spanning across both sides. This is Amicalola falls which is over 700 ft. high and is small in width but is reported to be the tallest east of the Mississippi River. It also it one on the starting points to the Applachian Trail. You can visit the park's web site at.

Ok, here we are at the end of jan and still no snow. what's up with that? we've only got about 2 more months to go. I'm not sure if I should be happy that's there's no snow or worried.
Mark Williams
I take it that this tread is dead? I was really hoping to see some of your snow videos.

Mark

I don't think its dead, we all just have our moments of inactivity or don't have anything new to share. Give it some more time and some new things should pop up.
TurtleTone2
it's been a really bad snow year here. we had one big snow fall at night, mixed with freezing rain. woke up and it was already black frozen yuk. Other than that, nada.

Hi
Here in north of Sweden we had a very warm december and first half of januari with rain, no snow. Now we have snow but it's too fu..ing cold to be outside, especially with a camcorder. Yesterday morning it was -25C, and this morning -15C. I guess it's not worth the risk to use the camcorder in theese temperatures. It's also hard to use all the buttons on the camera with glowes and it's too cold to use your bare hands. Better stay indoors.

Hey guys, first post but I visit this forum often. I shot this snow video in the middle of the huge blizzard we had yesterday. Shot on my DVC-30 with a Manfrotto tripod.
Lets get this thread going again!

Now that was one heck of a snow storm. I work with serveral transplants from Minnesota who complain all summer about the heat here in Georgia but don't miss MN at all in the winter.
Thanks for posting the snow clip. I enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed that. looked like a heavy snow fall. thanks for sharing it.

I’m new to these forums, (and shooting with my dvc-30) I have been reading and enjoying them for a few months now.
Here’s my snow video. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. We’ve had a lot of snow out west this year especially in New Mexico and Colorado.
I shot this video over a couple weekends in Jan/Feb, then I spent a few weeks editing. I used several scene settings based on “film like” but 60i & squeeze.

wow, some really great shots there. makes me miss the west. thanks for sharing.
well we have had some snow here in NYC, but when it does snow, it's just too cold to go out and it's nasty. maybe I'll catch an early spring snow.
Mark Williams
I really liked it. Nice eye for composition. The window shot at the beginng and end worked for me. I would offer one suggestion and that is the zoom shots seemed a little fast for me. I think about 1/2 to 3/4 that speed would be more appealling.
Great Work!

Thanks for the input. I've since invested in a decent tripod (benro c-228) and a pretty good video head (davis sanford fm180) so I can smooth out the pans a little.
I think I'm also going to use the remote for smoother and consistent zoom speeds. I notice that when recording the zoom speed is about half as fast as in standby.

Hi
At last, a short (pretty boring) snow video finished. Some things that had to be fullfilled to create it:
- Daylight
- Not to warm outside
- Not to cold outside
- Snow on ground
- Snow from sky
- Some spare time
The day arrives when all points above is fullfilled. It's really snowing outside. I realised that I have to charge a battery. I wrapped my camcorder in a plastic bag to protect it. I made a protection hood for the lens from a piece of transparency film (the kind used for printers) and mounted this ugly plastic container on the tripod and went out. I met some neighbours who looked at me as if I came from a planet somewhere else in the galaxy. Then, finally I pressed the record button. What happends? IT ALMOST STOP SNOWING!!! Unbeliveable!
I spent about an hour outside filming. After that I went inside and ten minutes later it snowed more than ever before, so I missed the real thing.
Well, this is the short result, even if I had whished more snow during the filming.

Bov,
Thanks for posting your snow video. My favorite shots were of the birds and the emerging flower due to the contrast of the colors with the snow background. Also the scene with the tilt up of the snow covered evergreen.

Mark
