View Full Version : Returned my GZ-HD7. OIS not acceptable.

p6889k
After much thought, I have unfortunately decided to return my GZ-HD7. The OIS was not functioning or at best very poorly performing. This is a dealmaker for me as it renders the camcorder unusable without a tripod. I'm not a pro, but an enthusiast shooting mostly family videos and not having a stabilized image is a problem. I went to BestBuy on Sunday and compared stabilization to Canon HV20, Panasonic HDC-SD1 and SONY HDR-SR1. All of these camcorders were clearly superior in regards to image stabilization.

I'm very disappointed at JVC to release such an expensive camcorder without proper OIS. I called JVC about it and they said it should be working and if I think it's not to send it to a JVC repair shop. I didn't want to do that as I would loose my opportunity to return the camcorder if JVC comes back saying it works within specs. Who knows, this may end up being a product line defect, but I don't have time to wait for a potential recall.

Luckily, I was able to get a full refund and not incur 15% restocking fee at CircuitCity. At first a sales rep tried to convince me that it is working a little bit and that it's not a defect and that I would have to pay 15% fee. I said I don't accept that and that it's clearly a defect and asked for a manager. Store manager tried to convince me that maybe it only works in manual mode. After he switched to manual mode and tried it he realized that it's also not working. He played with it for about 20 minutes while trying to make me exchange it for another unit of the same model. I told him, that I believe this is a product line defect and want my money back. Then he tried to sell me a different model and finally gave me my money. The key was to convince them that this is a defect, or product not working as advertised.

Now I'm back where I started, trying to decide what to purchase next. HDC-SD1 or SD3 is out of question as it has no accessory shoe, limited battery life and potential quality and usability problems with AVCHD. I like HV20, but it's a tape based camcorder. I really wanted HDD camcorder for convenience. I also like the features of HDR-SR1, but it also has AVCHD limitations. Like I said, I'm back where I started.

For everyone that is considering the GZ-HD7, make sure you test the OIS yourself to see if it's acceptable to you. There are probably some of you that don't care about OIS that much and can appreciate other features that this camcorder has. I must say that I was very happy about the camcorder in general.

Good luck.

P6889K,

I also returned GZHD7, and ordered same again, I am assuming & hopeing this new camcorder would be fine. They also gave me full refund, but if my new camcorder will have same problem, and if I will go again they would charge me 15% restoking fees!

Have you captured any videos with tripod? I did took some clips and they were amazing! How can I use every time tripod? And what is use of camcorder if I have to use compalsorry tripod?

And if the OIS is like that only then I have no choice, I have to stick with JVC GZHD7.

I would like to exchange it for one that works, but every single one I tried in the various stores I went to had the same problem. Shots from a tripod looked great though. Very bright areas were burned out, but I could live with that. I don't need perfection, I just need all the features to give at least average performance. OIS performance was nonexistent.

Let me know how your new copy works out. I'm right now thinking about either HV20, which means dealing with tapes, or waiting a couple of weeks to see if SONY releases HDR-SR1 replacement. There are some rumors on various sites that it might be happening any day so we'll see. If nothing happens within two weeks, I'll get the Canon. You can get it from Dell now for $990, including shipping and no taxes. That's a really good price, considering that with the money saved from $1700 JVC, I could by another camcorder next year when hard drive camcorder technology matures.

If I'm not mistaken, won't a Sony HDR-SR1 replacement also be AVCHD format? I'm pretty confident AVCHD will mature in not that long of time (at least that's what I'm banking on).

If you keep the HD7 and don't want to drag around a tripod, you might want to consider a trekpod. it is a monopod that opens into a somewhat stable tripod--but it's also a walking stick. Might be an alternative for you to get a little more stability and a little more portability than a tripod.

Hi Guys!

I replaced my JVC GZHD7 and bought same, but unfortunately it is same, so GZHD7 is working like this, all pieces are same.

You will find one huge file (431MB), that file is actually demo clip of JVC GZHD7, I am sure you will stunned if you see it, and if GZHD7 is capable of that kind of video, then this is great camcorder, and if it is like that than I don’t know how to use camcorder! Anyway I took some videos, see them send your feedback. See particularly that huge file which is real footage of GZHD7, and it was in camcorder hard-disk as a demo clip!

Thanks,
Rush

Unfortunately Megaupload has a download limit. It will take several days to download all your video.

Could you maybe use one of the following which have no limits.

Good luck.

I went to BestBuy and it is a night and day difference between JVC and the Sony HDR-SR1 or the Canon H20. Both those have great OIS but the JVC was jerky and not stable when zoomed in at 10x.

It is a shame i thought this camcorder would be cool. i will also hope for a HDR-SR1 replacement with a better decoder.
