I purchased mine on Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-DCR-HC96-Digital-Handycam-Camcorder/dp/B000E0I5AI/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-6679058-8105652?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1180628165&sr=8-1) . Price is $547 w/ free shipping/no tax.
Usually ships in 1-2 days and I have always had good luck with amazon.

I purchsed a Sony HC96 from Abe's of Maine about three weeks ago for about $540. Overall I was very satisfied. Service was good, and the camcorder arrived in a factory sealed box within a week. The only warning I would give is that they aggressively try to sell you accessories like lens filter, extra battery, warranty. I politely declined and they processed my order, which shipped within a few days.

newegg, amazon, etc. are great.
just watch out for the discount and slight discount retailers with "good ratings". They are scammers. You can tell who these guys are because they have a cluster of cut-throat pricing within $50-$75 of each other.
These guys prey on people seeking digital cameras and video cameras. If they just had bad customer service, that would be 100 times better than what they typically do to customers. If any retailer, after paying for product with your credit card, sends you a receipt asking to call a special number or calls you directly after purchase, run far far far away.
One of these guys got belligerent with the person who was buying my camera as a gift. She was told she was "a piece of **** for not buying the extended warranty package" (one of the nicer phrases) and all sorts of hostle bullying tactics. After a yelling match, she asked to cancel the order and hung up.
You could only imagine how many people they sucker into buying a camera "discounted" $150 only forced into buying $400 worth of bogus warranty and accessory packages.
