View Full Version : Sony -vs- JVC HDD

BTW - Baby coming in 2 weeks so I have little time to get this done. I appreciate the help.

ok, I have read just about every post in here about what type of HDD to buy. I have a miniDV but am real tired of tapes and 2 step process to dvd. I want an HDD that has great picture quality. I don't really care about stills because I have a digital. I want to download from the camera to pc easy, docking station, or at least not needing to be a computer sience major to do it. Also I am just now getting into edits but this isn't a huge deal. I have heard that Sony software is not easy to use and JVC is. I don't want to spend more then $800 but will if the difference between cameras is that huge. Also HD is not a factor at this point. I am looking at Sony S300 or JVC MG555. Or am I off base?

I have the 300 now. I had the 555 but it was stolen from me. The sony is much better than the 555. The basic software that comes with sony does not let you do much editing, but you can use any software. The JVC has horrible wind noise....it is really slow at focusing and you will have o edit a lot of blurry shots. The software is also not the full version of cyberlink. It is easy to use, but with the sony you can use prety much any software. The JVC records in Mod.
Video quality on the 300 is much better. I have owned only JVC in the past but I think I am a Sony guy now.

Hi
Thanks for telling us your impression.
That's strange because camcorderinfo rated the MG555 higher than the 300. How was the MG555 in low-light? Shouldn't it be better than the Sony?

Well the 555 has a light and a flash, the 300 has just a flash..but it has the night shot. The 555 was ok but using the nightshot I like the Sony better...as long as you don't mind the green hue. I did like all the features on the 555. It was amazing for features. But the Sony takes better still in my opinion and is easier to use and I believe better quality.
Just my opinion though. This is my third hard drive camcorder and I like it.

Thanks for the replies. I appreciate the help and advice. I'll look into both a little more.

The 555 was ok but using the nightshot I like the Sony better...as long as you don't mind the green hue.The Sony NightShot is a true infrared imaging system. The Color NightShot does add some coloring to the image.
