SDR-H40 - dowloading/editing files?

I recently purchased the SDR-H40, and I get an error everytime I use the enclosed software (VideoCam Suite 1.0). I've decided to buy a better editing software package (I'm looking at Power Director) but I wanted to make sure that I am properly downloading the files.

When I connect the camera with the USB cord, it shows up as an external drive, and there are two files for each clip -- a .MOD file and a .MOI file. I can play the .MOD files on Real Player. Do I need to download the .MOI file as well to use in the editing software? Do I need to combine these files and, if so, how do I do that?

This is an article on JVC camcorders (http://www.elurauser.com/articles/JVC_Everio_mod_files.jsp), but Panasonic camcorders have the same directory structure and file names.
