View Full Version : help on NTSC to PAL for TRV80.

peri
hey there guys. since the methods i read in other threads didnt help me i will tell you exactly my problem and hope you can help me. i have read many threads and i tried to do what they said, but there were no results. this is why i need your help. so here goes.

i ve got a trv80 which i bought in the US (thus it is NTSC) but now i am in Europe (PAL). i can see perfectly on my panasonic viera, but only when it is connected straight on the tv. i cannot burn on dvd what i can see. let me explain.i ve got my Sony dar-rh1000 dvd recorder connected to my tv via scart (av1). when i plug my camcorder on the dvd recorder, i can see the video but it is distorted, and the sound is like a chewed up tape (remember those?)! when i connect the camcorder to the tv, i set the tv on the component option, thus i cannot record from my recorder because the av1 option (which is appointed to it) is not selected. all it records this way is what is broadcasted that time on tv.
i tried doing it on my pc but still nothing. i bought firewire pci card and connected them directly. i used both Nero and Magic DVD Burner, but in every setting i tried the video is like it is in slow motion and the sound as before.
has anyone anything to advise me that i have not already done? i dont want to take my videos to a professional but i dont want them to be left on that almost obsolete medium.
thank you all in advance.
Chris.

Chris;

Your TRV80 records in the NTSC standard. It is not compatible with the PAL standard. It probably plays back on your "panasonic viera" which I guess is a TV. Your TV is either NTSC or NTSC/PAL compatible. I do not know for sure. You Sony dar-rh1000 dvd recorder is most likely PAL and not NTSC compatible that's why it does not work.

You need to check what standards your equipment is compatible with.

Hi Chris,
poncho is absolutely correct in what he is saying.
If your intention is to archive the footage onto DVD then technology has probably turned in your favor.
If you capture the video from the cam onto a computer via firewire then from that video create an NTSC dvd you are pretty well there.

Most PAL DVD players these days have the capabiltiy of dealing perfectly well with NTSC DVDs. It used to be that NTSC DVD players were not compatible with PAL DVDs in the past but more and more I am hearing reports of even those ones playing the other format with no problems.

hey guys. yeah, i know that it is a NTSC/PAL problem, that is why i am struggling. yes, the viera is my tv which is compatible for both standards. i cant solve my prob by writing a NTSC dvd and i cant see on my dvd recorder because it is in PAL. i dont have the option (and i dont want to anw) to buy an NTSC dvd recorder. i did try to write a dvd (in any standard) but i had no luck with that.

the bottom line is that i ve got a NTSC camcorder, everything else is in PAL and my PC didnt give me the solution i had hoped for.
this is why i turned to you for advise. i hope now that you have all the details you can help me. any thoughts?

thanx for your time.

Ok, here is what I would do in that situation.
I would totally ignore the DVD recorder and the TV.
I would connect the cam to the PC via firewire connection and capture to the computer. In the computer using nero or magix I would render to a DVD compliant MPEG2 file and burn an NTSC DVD in the computer.

I know that may sound wacky to you because I can't see your setup and you still haven't said what you final goal for all this is. You say you "connected them" directly. I worry about "them!" It should read, I connected IT." (The camcorder) to IT (the computer).

peri
hehe, i liked your reply lancecarr :)
by saying 'them' i do mean my camcorder and my pc as you guessed correctly. but how can i capture on my pc and burn on dvd when the video and the sound are distorted? if the videos were ok, there wouldnt be any need for me to ask advice. i would only need to burn a dvd.
what do you mean my setup? my os? i run XP. and my final goal is to have my videos on dvd which i will be able to watch on my tv.
cheers...

Ok, your camcorder is a stock standard mini DV camcorder that records NTSC DV AVI on to tape. I am guessing you wanted to capture to the DVD recorder on the fly to make the DVDs...well that didn't work so you will have to get conventional.
You connect the firewire to the cam and the other end to the computer and capture the video as DV AVI. files on the computer. That will be about 13gig per hour. If you have no capturing software or Nero is giving you grief search for WinDV on the net. It is a small utility for capturing DV AVI files from camcorders. nero may have been giving you grif because you were trying to get it to capture to MPEG2 files with PAL properties. It wouldn't like that.

Once you capture you should have DV AVI files with NTSC properties on the computer in the location that you, of course, remembered to remember!

Then you can open Nero and import the DVD AVI files into Nero Vision Express ready to convert to MPEG2 (with NTSC properties) then author to a DVD.

Note: At this point I am sitting here worrying that you have no video editing software on your computer only a Nero burning software. For your sake I hope that is not true!
Pleae post back the good news that you have the Nero suite with Nero Vision express!

poncho
but how can i capture on my pc and burn on dvd when the video and the sound are distorted?I don't know how you transferred your video to your computer, but I will guess you tried to use USB. Read these threads: USB vs Firewire (For MiniDV and Digital8 Camcorders) (http://www.camcorderinfo.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=124266)

and my final goal is to have my videos on dvd which i will be able to watch on my tv.Read this Sticky: How involved is it to take footage from mindv and put it on DVDs??? (http://www.camcorderinfo.com/bbs/t112471.html)
