View Full Version : Sunpak 7500

PaladinPete
Hi all, I'm new to this forum but I've been lurking for the past few weeks and I've received some great information.
I've just ordered the Velbon PH-368 and I will be purchasing the Sunpak 7500 tripod for the legs. I've looked at the tripod at Best Buy, and for the life of me I can't see how to remove the head that it comes with and replace it with the Velbon unit. What am I missing
Thanks for the help and I will be asking a lot more questions. ;)

Are you sure you saw the 7500 Pro? I'm not familiar with it, but on BestBuy.com they don't have the 7500 Pro, and the closest match there is the Platinum Plus 72, with the model number 620-750TMBB. I don't think that's the same, but I could be wrong.

Yes, that was the 7500. I don't know what's on the website, but in the store was the 7500, at least that's what is written on the leg. I can't get it until next week, so I'll double check.

I bought the 7575 on Circuit City yesterday, which probably is the same thing more or less, and basically you just tight the head so that it doesn't pan, and move it counter clockwise to unscrew it from the column.

Cool, thanks for the information. My Velbon head should be arriving today and then off to BestBuy or Circuit City.

I also ordered the Velbon head. If you can please post your experience with it, if you find it better to the one that comes with the Sunpak or not. I sent a message to the US distributor of Sunpak asking them about the differences between the different models being sold now, and they told me that they're all the same, 7500 Pro, 7575 and Ultra 757.

Actually, I was wondering the same thing. It's great that you found out the real story.

The head is here and looks great. I'll try to get the legs tomorrow and let you know what I find out.

hey I just bought the velbon cx586 which has that velbon head on it. I want to remove it and put it on my manfrotto legs....it doesn't seem to come off? how does your head attatch? I tried to twist it off but it may be glued?

Any help would be appreciated.

Dave, I just locked the head down tightly and then I was able to unscrew it. the sunpak head came off easily and I just replaced it with the Velbon head.

I don't know if the head on your tripod is removable or not. I purchased the head separately from the sunpak legs.

Unfortunately there are some Velbon tripods that come with the PH-368 head but it is not removeable. I have a Videomate 607 and it has the head but it will not come off. In order to get the head that will fit on the 7500 you have to order just the head by itself. It only costs about $35 from B&H though.

The Velbon head is a very good head. It pans very smoothly and you can adjust the drag making it just right for your application. It's a far better head than the Sunpak head even though the Sunpak head isn't terrible. The one good thing about the Sunpak head is that it has the third axis which is great for still cameras. It allows you to turn your still camera up to take portrait style photos instead of landscape photos. So with the Sunpak head for stills and the Velbon head for video you have a very good combination when you buy the 7500 and the PH-368.

The only problem with these setups is that they are made of mostly plastic parts. But plastic can be very strong and durable. But it isn't steel. You know steel won't warp and cause problems but I've yet to hear anyone say they've had a problem with the plastic on a Velbon head. They really are exceptional especially considering what they cost.
