View Full Version : Size Of AVI Files
joebeaven
Hi,
I recently converted a series of FLV files to a single AVI with Sony Vegas 8. The AVI file came out as I wanted it except for it's size. The original FLV files were just over 300 MB, but the AVI file was just under 10 GB. Please can someone tell me how I can produce an AVI file of a reasonable size (similar to the input file(s)')?
Thanks,
Joe

If you converted it to DV-AVI, that's (approx.) 13. 5 GB/hr.
The only way to get the size down is to either reduce the frame rate or use a different render codec such as DivX.
It also depends on what you want to do with it which you haven't said.
If it's eventually for DVD authoring, leave it as DV-AVI.

Hi Mike,
I'd like AVI files so that I can play them on my DVD player (which will play AVI files on DVD).
I'd also like to convert some files to MPG so that they'll play on my friend's Playstation 3 from DVD.
I'd like the files to be as small as possible without losing quality (preferably the same size as the original input files).
Thanks,
Joe

I've seen the "13.5Gig" number for 1 hour of video thrown out quite a bit lately. However, that number is high. Just now checking, I have a file that is 30 minutes 10 seconds long. That file is 6.4 Gig. That would make 1 hour about 12.8 Gig (I've always figured between 12.5 and 13Gig for 1 hour)
Secondly, wanting a "AVI" file really doesn't say anything. AVI is simply a file extension that can hold many different types of video. As seen, DV-AVI is one such format and is about 13Gig/hour. You could also get uncompressed AVI would be MUCH larger (a 5 minute uncompressed clip on my hard drive is 11.6 Gig making 1 hour about 139Gig). Your original files are probably XVid or DivX which are highly compressed and, therefore, much smaller.
Finally, standard DVDs are MPEG2 and should play in DVD player, playstation 3, and anything else that plays standard DVDs. You can easily get a couple of hours on a DVD.
