Let me say upfront that I'm a long time still photographer but just beginning to research video.
In starting to research for a potential camcorder purchase I came across this site.
The review for the new HF11 is up and in looking at it there's something odd. On this page (http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Canon-Vixia-HF11-Camcorder-Review-35436/Performance.htm) of the review, about 1/3 of the way down there's a comparison between the HF10 and HF11 with respect to compression artifacting. The reviewer makes the assertion that the HF11 is improved over the HF10. I don't really see any difference in compression artifacts but what I do see is a very pronounced difference in exposure. To the point where highlight detail is lost in the shots from the HF11. There's a bit more shadow detail but at the cost of the highlights and at the cost of washed out colours. Personally, I prefer the HF10 in this regard.
What can this be attributed to? Presumably the footage was taken within moments with the two cameras so the lighting shouldn't be much different and the camera should have compensated for the exposure difference anyway (assuming it was on an AE mode).
Is this overexposure of the highlights acceptable to anyone? I'm curious why it wasn't point out in the review.
Thanks.
