Here in NY, a friend X has a music reel of ten songs of her deceased partner Y. Y never registered the copyright with the Lib of Congress. I am trying to fill out form SR (and maybe form PA) to register the songs.
Of course I could spend $$ and go to some lawyer, but if anyone has familiarity with those forms I have 3 questions.
--1--
Question 2 under Nature of Authorship it asks for a brief description.
I want to write, in X's name: I am claiming copyright to both the sound recording and the underlying composition.
Correct?
--2--
Question 4b asks: Transfer--If the claimant named here in 4a is different from the author named in space 2, give a brief statement of how the claimant obtained ownership of the copyright.
What should I say? She has the reel, he never registered, can I say, "Author is deceased, no prior copyright exists, claimant was partner and has possession of tracks via reel."
Correct?
--3--
If I try to save bucks by registering all 10 songs at once can I release individual tracks as singles or music videos?
If no one knows, can someone suggest where to go for free or modestly priced advice? The dreaded lawyer? Some agency? Got any name for either?
Any help would be appreciated.
