How does 480i look?
Hi everyone, new member here.
I'm sure most who have bought this camcorder bought it for its HD capabilities. But, there are cases when a videographer would need to match 480i using the GR-HD1 with another non-HD camcorder's video. I’ve been reading your forum for some time & I haven't read any comments about the cameras standard 480i quality verses the DVX100 or even the TRV900. I know the GR-HD1 has true 16x9 capabilities & a higher pixel CCD might be an advantage over the others that don’t, but is there a 4x3 comparison anywhere? Thanks in advance! |
Others have said differently, but my impression is that the SD quality is mediocre and not as good as most (if not all) 3 chip cameras.

The 480i is great! It blows my GL2 out of the water.

QE, is your GL2 malfunctioning? Or do you need corrective lenses (glasses)? Seriously though, having seen, and worked with both cameras, clearly the SD mode on the JVC is inferior in color, richness, and depth when compared to the 3 CCD cameras (the good ones, anyway). To say otherwise is to spread misinformation, foster falsely elevated expectations, and diminish the perception of the JVC where it really shines (in HD).

Might it be due to "oversampling"? I have to tell you that it is very good footage except at very low light conditions.

I'm still sticking to what I said the HD1 is very good even in 480p or 480i. I must admit the problems like you said but the camera is dam good. Yes, my GL2 is A OK but I have had to have it repaired twice..lol (Dam those blown pixels..lol especially at $900 a pop)

My real question is; Do you really believe the SD quality to be better than the 3 chip GL2? Or are you exagerating to make a point? If it is the former, I strongly disagree, if it is the latter, point taken.

I do think the 480p resolution of the hd1 is comparable to the GL2, but I do have issues with the Brown and Black hue problems in low light (Got to keep it well lite with this camera) and I also hate the manual exposure control the on the HD1. However I do admire the GL series manual controls much much more, "full freedom"..lol. I may have over stated the 480p quality of the hd1 but "hey" I'm dam amazed by the quality in 720p HD mode. It makes me want Canon, Sony, Panasonic, or even JVC (I'd prefer a Canon) to come out with a 3ccd Hd unit more and more. Wow, Can you image the possiblilities?
I've only shot slow scenes with the HD1 and have yet to do any high speed scenes, what I do normally does not demand it. Have you shot any high speed scenes? If so have you experience the dreaded pixel problem that can be associated with mpeg compression? Anything with you can do with this camera that could curtal the problem? Thanks in advance. Mark |
OK, now it makes some sense. The original comment was that 480i (not p) "blew away" the GL2....not quite as it turns out.

My sport hobbie is fencing, which is very fast moving sport with ok (not great) indoor fluroscent lighting. The few clips that I have done with my HD10 at 720p 30fps have been awesome.

ccbatson,
Ok we confused each other..lol. A mistake on my part. I should have been more clear that I was talking about p. I just think the i is great too as compared to most interlaced cameras. Adraxas, Thanks for let me know how the camera will do under high action. If it looks great with action sports then it should look excellent for other action scenes too. Any one tried "smoke" or "explosions"? Any problems? These two can be horrific on mpeg images. Thanks in advance. |
