Are you connecting via firewire ? Firewire is what you should use to transfer full quality video, not USB. USB is suitable for transferring stills from a memory stick.

I have and use a USB2.0 Maxtor external drive (7200 RPM) with a 2 Mb cache (connected to a USB2.0 port on my PC) and it works fine to capture to.
