maybe conflict ....
I have JVC gr-d71u and I had difficulties to capture firewire video.
I would be able to see camera in device manager and when I tried capture
it would play camera and I could see my video on camera...

works fine for me
I have gdr71u and it works great.
I did notice noise and image quality problems
when AV cable was not plugged in all the way.
Try to reseat cable and maybe borrow replacement to test.
