Faulty Camera
It sounds like you got a faulty camera.
I have a 201 and only in completely silent shots, and then turning the TV up really loud can you hear a slight wirring .... but this is getting pretty picky....

Camera time
My camera takes about 20-25 seconds when you first put the disc in the drive, but after that (unless you open the door) it's much quicker
It will start up pretty quick after that unless the battery...

WMM handles the AC3 no problem if you have a decoder installed on your system.
What is a problem is getting WMM to use the pixela codec's ..... it will do it .... but I still haven't found a way to...

Finalise
Sounds like you need to finalise your discs .... nothing will play them otherwise, and if that's the case, it also sounds like you need to have a good read of the manual.

No other device other than your camera will be able to play your disc's unless it is finalised.

After you click Save Movie choose DV-AVI as the output format, all the others are wmv.
You need to choose "Other settings" to choose DV-AVI.

Movie Burning
Windows Movie Maker has no burning abilty, it is only an editor.
Save your project as a movie file (normally DV-AVI format)
And then burn with an encoding / authoring program like Nero.

I not saying that it definately IS the problem. But there have been doesens and doesens of posts saying, "I've got "non-sony" band discs and I've lost my footage.
Dry cloth is good, still no go then...

Have you tried cleaning the disc ? , do it even if it doesn't look dirty.
Are you using a genuine Sony DVD-RW ? ... if not, looks like you've just learned a hard lesson.

From memory I got them for 10.95 at JB, they would drop them to 9.95 if I brought 10 ... but I've found 6 is heaps for what I do.

Answered my own question
Interesting .... yes it does use a audio codec. But video codec is the same.
And even more interesting, after going through this process I now have the pixela codec appearing in movie maker !! ........

You need to identify in Device Manager what the camera has been installed as. In most cases it will be there as a DVD-Rom.
