What the hell is "1080/50i/30P/25P/24P and 720/50P"? Where are 1080/60i and 720/60p? And why would you do a nonremovable lens?

Once again, I have to point out that Dave Walton of JVC has said that it's a misconception that 24p isn't part of the HDV spec. What has been published since 2003 may not be exhaustive but simply be...

"I have used the 24p feature on the Panasonic 100a just for fun and I would never use it for anything professional."

Ironically, the 24p is probably why most people buy the camcorder, and there...

I'm well aware that 24p isn't there. As far as I know, Walton was the first to mention it. Maybe Walton is mistaken. It's just as likely that he's not. You've pointed me to a single Web page of HDV...

"That, and because 1080p and 24fps are not part of the HDV specification! There are attempts to add to the HDV spec, but then it won't be the HDV spec but a superset (and proprietary)."

In "JVC...

Your assertion that "the HDV specification does not include an option for 24P" apparently is a misconception that has carried the weight of fact since the HDV spec was announced. According to "JVC...

The horizontal resolution of DVCPro HD at 720p is 960, and at 1080i/p it's 1,280. I assume that the HVX is compatible with these.

True, the Sony doesn't do 1080p, but 1080p24 doesn't need to be done...

Not sure what you mean, but you're dead wrong if you think there aren't people who could really use a cheaper 24p solution. For those needing 24-fps film output -- admittedly a small market --...

To some the Sony cameras, although offering obvious advantages (e.g., three CCDs vs. one, better low-light performance), don't represent a "move up." Aside from being interlaced, they don't offer...

At the $1,000 price level, $300 is significant, but for a $3,400-$3,700 camcorder (it seems obscene to call any camcorder that expensive "consumer" grade), $300 might get lost in the street-price...

How about larger -- or at least higher-resolution (e.g., 1.6-Mpixel) -- CCDs?

Why? Even though this has been the case, why is it necessary? Adding lens interchangeability should be doable for a few...

It would be interesting if JVC did a 3-chip, 720p24/724p30 camcorder, and if dropped the "pro" version and rolled the XLR jacks into the "consumer" model -- all for, say, $2,500-$3,000. If Sony's pro...

Yeah, it's really unfortunate that there's no 24p and that the true resolution is only 960 x 1,080. But the real mistake is forcing editing software vendors to play catch-up -- again.

Canon and/or Sony may use NTT's VASA MPEG-2 encoder/decoder chip, which supports 1080i, 1080p24, and 720p (I presume 30p), as well as 480i and 480p SD. It also supports 4:2:2 sampling (which, unlike...

Doesn't sound like enough pixels. The JVC HD1/10's CCD has 1.18 million pixels, and the XL2, fewer than 700,000. And this assumes that Canon, like JVC, will do 720p -- and the rumors I've heard say...

"In other words, the fact that the Panasonic GS400 only supports 30P is not a major shortcoming for most (99.9%) of us who do not plan to transfer our videos to film."
Correct, as far as that goes....
