Early HC1's did work with aftermarket batteries. Mine does. Later ones have revised firmware to block that. :(

I think the downconverted footage is better. The HC1 is being discontinued/replaced with the A1. Also look at the HC3 which is more economical.

NTSC is used in the Americas and not just the US. It is, therefore, an international standard like PAL and SECAM.

HDV PAL records at 50i. HDV NTSC records at 60i. They aren't compatible (again).

I used to use Studio 9 too.

First the camera encodes HD data at 1440x1080 to tape. Anything coming from tape will be that resolution. The easiest way to grab a still from it is to play the footage...
