JVC GR-HD1 tips & clips

I have had my GR-HD1 for several years now and I think I have just now really figured it out while researching for my next HDV camera. I don't think the GR-HD1 was ever really all that bad, it was just the first of its kind and and all the issues with HDV and MPEG2 were not realized or defined yet.

When I started researching all the different HDVs available, I discovered they all have the GR-HD1 problems to some extent.

I think some of the best tips are in Steve Mullens "Tiny JVC Guide" which is really Appendix D to his larger HDV shooting guide.

I am not sure if this forum hosts video clips. Does anyone know? I would like to post a few clips.

When the JVC GR-HD1 first came out because it was a single chip CCD most people assumed that the camera traded off color reproduction for higher resolution. Therefore rumors were spread that the camera had horrible color reproduction. This was simply not true. Because the JVC used a unique hybrid primary complimentary color filteration system the camera was able to achieve better color reproduction than some 3CCD HDV cameras were capable of.

Although owners of the JVC insisted that the camera had bad color reproduction this was a delusion based on biases against a single CCD. The only way to judge the color reproduction objectively is with a double blind test where the participants view the footage without being aware of which camera shot it. This is by the way how Consumer Reports test televisions. When the expert panel views the television the brand name is covered up so that biases against certain brands are eliminated.

Is the "Tiny JVC Guide" available anywhere by itself?

Did you ever sell your GR-HD1?

Im getting ready to sell mine. It's going to be cheap or I don't think I will ever sell it.

It took me the last year to capture all the tapes to hard drive.

I know this is kind of an old post but I recently purchased my JVC GR-HD1 second hand. The camera is in perfect condition but I'm lacking all the accessories that came with the original package. Anyone out there know where I could find the Accessory pack or, at the very least, where I can find an AC cable? Otherwise I'm looking at lugging a lot of batteries around.

Thanks! (b'-')b

I still have my GR-HD1, a good camera.

The factory battery charger for the HD-1 has a small jack on the side that a jumper cable from charger to camera plugs in.

Do you at least have the factory charger?

There are still lots of aftermarket chargers available, but they will not have the jumper cable socket.

The battery life on the GR-HD1 is pretty good, why do you need hard wired power?

Thanks for the reply.

I do have the factory charger, there's just no cable that came with it. Having several batteries isn't really a concern but I'm just thinking of ingesting my tapes; IE losing power in the middle of a transfer.

Understood.

The cable is fairly basic, should be easy to get.

Well i currently own a Jvc GZHm200, but im considering selling it and buying a Jvc Gr hd1 ? Would i notice a lot of difference ?
Hm200 claims to be FullHD but i dont really feel like that when i'm filming.

I'll usually film just skateboarding with a wide angle lens, so manual controls are not really required, but color capture ( reproduction) and resolution must be at least fine.
Also the handle on the HD1 is a precious addtion.

What do you guys think, should i keep my hm200 or go for the GR HD1 ?

thanks !

I still have my GR HD-1 and shot a wedding with it in August 2009. I think it's a good camera, but does not do well in low light. However, that may not be a concern for you.

Since I don't have a HM200, I dont really know how it compares to the HD-1.

I have had the Canon XH-A1 and currently use the Panasonic HMC-150 as my primary camera. The HD-1 is not quite as good as those in good light, but is not too far behind. However in low light, the A1 & 150 are much better than the HD-1.

I will try to upload some footage for you to review.

Also, the GR HD-1 is no longer available. Can you find one somewhere?

Thanks, a recently uploaded footage from JVC hd1 would be helpful, as youtube only got some old footage and the conversion was not well made.

Theres always someone selling a HD1 here in Brazil, as most people are migrating to more advanced 3CMOS camera, but as i'll just film skateboarding during the day, in well iluminated areas. I really dont need a $5000 camera that performs great in low light.

My HM200 performs fine but not what i expected as it is 1080i, and i've heard a lot about 720p being better and stuff, also GRHD1 have the handle and some manual controls that are quite helpful.

I'm just really concerned about the fidelity of the color reproduction. Is that really that bad ?

Also what can you tell me about the 480/60p mode, i'll use a lot of slow motion, and would it a way to go ?

Thanks !1
