poor quality in mpeg streamclip?

I've tried both demuxing and converting to dv - to be honest I'm a newbie to this whole thing as of yesterday, so I'm just going off what I've read in bunches of forums. My goal is to edit together different clips and throw in effects & audio, etc - so I'd like to use final cut express or at least iMovie. Just can't get the quality right though.

When I use my pc I can create a simple dvd with great quality video - so I don't think there's an issue with the camera recording settings. And when I use the program that came with the camera (Capty MPEG Edit EX) the video looks fine. I just want to use a different program to edit it.

If the video looks strange in mpeg streamclip, I'm thinking there might be an issue before I'm even converting the mod file - any idea what?

I'm also in the search for the best way to edit my mod files on my mac. I recently purchased an HDD cam and have tried converting the files as DV and demux, I also notice a considerable loss of quality from the original mod.

Thanks
