JVC GR-D72 capture problems

I have a new computer running windows XP it was built with DV editing in mind.

I recently bought a JVC GR-D72. I was really pleased with it until I tried to capture the video I shoot on to my computer. When I plug it in through the firewire. I can control the camera (play, fast forward, rewind) but I can’t capture anything. Furthermore the preview window is blank on the PC but the LCD screen on the camera shows the tape is being played. I have tried capturing the video with Windows Movie Maker, Image Mixer (the software that came with the camera), and Pinnacle Studio 9. All three programs will control the camera but none will capture anything.

If I hook up my friends Sony mini DV to my machine it works flawlessly with all three above mentioned programs. Does JVC just suck or am I missing some important step?

Can anyone help me trouble shoot this issue.

same thing with GR-D33

I've had the same problem with a friends camera the GR-D33. You can control the camera, but capture fails. What is the deal with this??

Camcorders sometimes have problems with certain firewire cards. You know the cam is fine because it works with your friends computer. Since all three editing programs are having problems I'd try another firewire card and see what happens.

I do not run XP(still on 98SE), but sometimes these types of problems can be fixed by either reinstalling the firewire card's driver (remove the device in Control Panel and reboot: Windows will see the card and auto install the driver it has), or finding out the model of card and seeing if the manufacturer Web site has a newer driver.

probably conflict

I have JVC gr-d71u and I had difficulties to capture firewire video.

I would be able to see camera in device manager and when I tried capture
it would play camera and I could see my video on camera LCD but
there was nothing coming through to PC.

Camera worked fine on my friends laptop.

I player around and even installd XP instead of win 2000 but no help.

Thank I realised that Firewire card shared IRQ with sound blaster card.
I moved cards around untill I got separate IRQs but that still did not help.

Since I had onboard sound that was disabled I took sound blaster card out and enabled onboard sound and everything started to work fine.

Quality is great and I could not be happier.

Hardware I have is following

Asus A7N8X motherboard
Asus geforce 4 4200 video card
1 GB RAM
Few hard drives
Serial ATA raid card
Onboard sound and lan

I had same difficulties on both operating systems so
I suggest to take few things out if you know how.

If you don't have sound card (if you diable onboard sound and have no sound card in computer) most capture software will not work.

To test configuration in that case you can use WinDV.exe

That one does not care about sound and it will show video regardles.
You will have to pres play on camera since that one does not have controls.

Remember, camera will show up only if it is in Play mode !!!

If computer can see camera it will show it under imaging devices.

XP will label it AVC compliand DV camcorder
2000 has something like Microsoft dv and vcr device if I remember correctly.

If you can see those look for hidden conflicts ....

I hope this helps ...

Cheers!
