What about Expercam.com?

Anyone ever heard of Expercam.com? Are they legit? I got a bait and switch from them...

Good luck.

Dennis's reply completely covers it, but let me add this anyway. There are a handful of good online sellers out there, but an awful lot of dubious ones and quite a few plain rip off artists. If any seller is advertising a price more than a few percent below B&H or Beach Camera, run away.

I'll add a little....

If a store is NOT listed at www.resellerratings.com or other "consumer based" (eg. NOT "BBB") sites, then you should also avoid that store or find out what name(s) they WERE doing business under. Unless the store is brand new and run by your Uncle (eg. someone you know personally), avoid it if there's no info about it. Many scammers use the same "warehouse" (see other threads for photos of these "storefronts") and change their name every few months (when their bad reputation is known and revealed). So they "reopen" as yet another internet store with a new URL but same warehouse, often same address and phone.... and same bad service and "great deals to attract suckers". They consider the semi-annual name and domain changes just a "cost of doing business" I guess; and there certainly are enough "won't happen to me!" consumers who keep them lucrative.

So, please do shop around. Reserach not just your equipment but also your dealer. The manufacturer's web sites can also help listing their recommended (and valid warranty) dealers. There usually are a cluster of "good reputable stores" all about at the same price point (usually a bit under a retail chain store), and the semi-scamming dealers will set their prices below these to "stand out" in search engines and entice customers who can end up "saving" (or sometimes not!) but spending plenty of time in waiting for their product to ship, or arrive in stock, or come with standard accessories, or have a manual in your language, or be warranted in your area, or etc. How much is your time worth?

I have decided to make this list to help customers make the best buying decision when shopping for electronics through a magazine ad, or the Internet. It's amazing no matter how many warnings that are out there before someone buys from a "Scum Bag" outfit most of them in Brooklyn, NY aka King County, NY! People will still take a chance and go ahead and let themselves get ripped off.

This list will grow as it will take time to add all the names, addresses, and web site URLs for the list. Be careful and do your research before you buy. The best and safe way to do this is to go to the manufacturers web site and take a look at the list of authorized dealers.

Be careful out there it's a fraudulent jungle!

This is a great idea and could be very helpful. Just one question - is this list a list of who to stay away from or who you recommend buying from?

I think they are called 'The Non-Authorized Mail Order Dealers! aka "Scum Bags"' because they are not recommended.

This is an old thread and the list is probably outdated. I have dealt with B&H a few times over the years. I have always had excellent results with them: B&H Photo

I have also had excellent results with newegg for about three years: NewEgg

There are other good dealers; but I do not have any experience with them in purchasing camcorders.

Please check ResellerRatings before you make a purchase with any on-line merchant, Enter the store name in the "Enter STORE Name: (i.e. Newegg)" search block.

There are many on-line merchants who are not as honest as their web site might claim.

Re

Hi!

I need advise in the buying of SONY HDR-SR12e. In my country this set is selling for about US$1790

I've checked out many sites and read the authoriszed/non-authorized dealers' threads here

Many of the sites sell the SR12 (NTSC) model and others provide only local (USA) warranty

My needs are

a) SONY HDR-SR12e (PAL) model
b) international warranty

I'm not so concern if the set fails as I can get it repaired by SONY service center in my country if I have the international warranty.

This site 42photo.com seems to meet both my requirements. If I'll to add

SR12e - US$1014.99
4-yr int'l warranty - US$299.99
Shipping - US$100 (assume)

Total = US$1414,98

I can save a few hundreds to purchase some accessories on the net

http://www.42photo.com/pd-productid-14459-k-sony_hdr_sr12e_120gb_(hd)_hard_drive_digital_camco rder_(pal).htm

Can somebody advise? Is there a better site?

Thanks

I thought they did at one time, but I just don't know. You can send them an e-mail.

I agree with Adam about B&H.

Im sure most of the experts hear know this, but it's worth pointing out that the in-store price at B&H is often lower than the price they advertise on their site. For anyone in the NY metro area, I cannot give a more glowing recommendation for a place to buy A/V electronics than B&H - the store is incredibly well run, their prices are very fair, and they have A LOT of stuff - it is alwaysthe first place I look for anything A/V related, and most of the time, usually the last as well.

I actually didn't know that their in-store prices were lower; I was only there once when I lived in the area. But I suppose that helps compensate for having to pay sales tax if you buy in the store.

I don't even bother to shop anyplace else at this point.
