If I shoot 16x9, do most editing programs easily convert for viewing on std. TV's?

My Canon Optura Xi shoots in native 16x9 mode and when viewing this on standard TV (not a widescreen TV) the image is squeezed (what some call stretched, which I think is an inaccurate term, anyway. . .). I have not yet bought an editing program. If I get Ulead Video Studio or Premiere Elements, will these easily convert the widescreen video to standard aspect ratio, so that I can make a final edited version that will look right on standard TV's, as well as another version that will look ideal on widescreen TV's? Thanks for any knowledgable help!
