Difficulting in viewing .MOD and editing into DVD movie

I've seen quite a number of GraphicDragon's and other members' posts, thanks for all the tips.

First, I would like to know how can I download the Media Player Classic? I tried to search from Windows download site, but failed.

As regarding the .MOD files, I tried changing the .MOD files to .MPG manually one-by-one by renaming the extension name. However, I cannot author/edit any DVD movie by using Windows Movie Maker. It seem not recognise the converted .MPG file by Movie Maker.

I know, I can use the CyberLink DirectorExpress to make DVD movie, but I find the quality is poor and there is not much features in the software. So, could you help me how to make the DVD movie in Movie Maker.

Is there any different as compared to using the File Renamer software?

Hope to hear from any of you from the forum soon.

Flin, Media Player Classic looks like an early version of Windows Media Player but it's not made by Microsoft. You can download it here.

Windows Movie Maker doesn't work for editing .MOD files because it can't edit Mpeg2 video files. You can use other programs to convert the files into a usable format but the conversion will degrade video quality. Your best bet is to use an editing program that works with .MOD files.

Two programs that work with .MOD files are Womble MPEG Video Wizard DVD and Adobe Premiere Elements 2.0. Other programs that work with .MOD files have been mentioned in this forum but the names don't come to mind right now.

Thumbs up No bid deal with .MOD files from JVC Everio

Hi DragonGraphic, hi all,
With the superb tips from DragonGraphic and the rest in this thread, I'm now successfully make an excellent DVD movie from all my .MOD recorded with my JVC Everio MG-50.

I use the media player classic (the best) for .MOD files playback. And use the MPEG Video DVD Wizard for editing, and finally the CyberLink DVD Producer 3 for the authoring to burn DVD.

The DVD (disc burned) has excellent DVD quality movie play in computer and from DVD player on TV.

Now, I rate the JVC Everio the best in the CAMCODER market in term of the features, HDD recording, easy handling, and small in size...

Cheers.

Thanks for all your advice

Hi guys,

Just joined the forum after reading many interesting threads this morning.
I mainly am posting this to thank all of you who have supplied some brilliant information about converting the files from .MOD to MPEG.
Believe it or not I have not received my MV500 yet. I just ordered it yesterday on Ebay.
From the info already gleaned from your posts I should be able to hit the ground running in terms of transferring my files to my laptop and converting them to MPEG to burn to DVD.

I am so excited about getting my new Everio as the last camcorder i had was a Canon video 8 back in 1991 and no doubt should see some really glossy videos with my new camcorder.

Many thanks,

John

Thanks 4 all the Help, I've followed all the advice given and it's been very helpful, but...........

whenever I rename to .mpg I lose my 16:9 aspect ratio

It looks great in the "PowerDVD" app. provided as a .MOD but after renaming it becomes squashed any loses shape (and quality?).

Is there any way to mantain the original picture(Aspect) so it can be played and/or edited in other software(I'm using Premire Pro 1.5)?

Cheers!

Hi
You can use my tool sdcopy.exe(http://zyvid.com/smf/index.php?acti...ic=280.0;id=144). It can copy/rename the mod files to mpg and set the 16:9 widescreen flag.

As most of you know, the .MOD files are actually mpeg 2 video. To play the videos, you really need to rename the .MOD extension to .MPG so your computer can understand what it is. Renaming is also necessary because the camera starts back at MOV001.MOD when videos are erased. I use this handy, and free, renaming utility so I can rename many files at once.

File Renamer

To view the files properly, you need a good mpeg 2 codec. If you have a software DVD player, such as PowerDVD 5 NE (included with camera), then you have an mpeg 2 codec installed. If you don't have a software DVD player, then I suggest you install one. This is handy to test your authored and burnt DVDs without having to use a stand-alone DVD player. If you don't like PowerDVD 5 NE, check to see if your DVD burner came with another software player. Here are some links to commercial software DVD players.

CyberLink PowerDVD
Intervideo WinDVD
DVD X Player

You also have the option to download a free mpeg 2 codec but your results will very. If you simply don't want to install a software DVD player, then you will have to spend the time searching for free codecs and trying them out. Some are good and others horrible, so you may have to try a few.

Next you need an AC3 audio codec. Everio cameras record audio in Dolby AC3 format. Just download and install this great, and free, AC3 codec.

AC3Filter

Now on to viewing the video files. You can view mpeg 2 files from the software DVD players but this is a pain. DO NOT use Windows Media Player. It renders the video with skips and jaggy lines when there is motion. The best player for quickly viewing your files is Media Player Classic. It's fast, easy on system resources and doesn't have a bunch of crappy "features" you don't need. Oh, it's also free.

Media Player Classic
NOTE: Media Player Classic plays mpeg 2 and AC3 natively so you don't need to install either codec unless you wish to view files with other players.

This should get you up and running. If you have any problems, just post in this thread and I'll try to help you out.

you did state i should ask.....having just bought this gz-mg21ek and been on a movie making course at college i expected great things but not as easy as i hoped....having read your thread it was rather too hard for a simpleton like me...i want to know what i have to do to take film off my camera and edit it on the package it comes with, if thats what i have to use , and then get it onto a disc so other people can view it (probably on w.m.p) as everyone has that...i have messed about with the editing package and am ok with that, used video studio 8 at college but we could not get the MOD files to be compatable with studio 8.....i have big problems with my computer which is not helping, when i play files, mainly happens when useing w.m.p often it suddenly freezes, sometimers after a sharp crackling sound, i had this problem befor and formatted and re-installed xp and it still does it so something is wrong with p.c i guess so this is not helping me progress...but that aside i want to know is the package that comes with this camera,"cyberlink power director" is this the best to use , do i have to change the files as soon as i have downloaded from camera onto p.c or can that be done in one lump when i have edited the film together...and of course...how do i change them...i did do some editing and put it on a disc but they was MOD files although they show as pds files...hope im not confuseing you too much, i know i am me....

Hey keithhazel. If you read through the other threads in this forum you will see people talking about many different video editing programs. This information is only helpful if you are looking for a video editor that does more than the Cyberlink software that comes with the camcorder.

For someone just starting out, the Cyberlink software is fine and you can use it to edit the .MOD files and create video DVDs. You don't even have to convert the .MOD files after you copy them to your computer if you do it this way.

Just install the Cyberlink software and read the help files. You will soon be making video DVDs that you can share with friends and family. The DVDs will play fine on stand-alone DVD players and most any computer.

Don't let all the posts about renaming and converting confuse you. That's only necessary if you want to use software other than the provided Cyberlink for video editing or DVD creation.

Hi there,

I'm very new to HDD camcorders, and have just tried to make a DVD of our holiday clips.

I used cyberlink power producer to import the files from the camcorder, renamed them as Mpeg, then burned them to DVD after having merged quite a lot of the clips.

The problem is when I play the DVD on my standard DVD player so we can see it on the TV, I cant fast forward, rewind or do anything really with the files except play them. Don't really want the whole family stood round the computer to watch lol.

Can you help???

Thanks very much Neil.

Hey neilkav. From your post, I think I know what the problem is.

It seems you have burned the clips to DVD as a data disk. This means the files were just copied directly to a DVD without the special formatting necessary to create a video DVD. Many stand-alone DVD players, like yours, can still play data disks but lose functionality like fast forward and reverse.

What you need to do is use Power Producer to create a video DVD. This is called "authoring". Then the disk will be in the same format as DVD movies you buy from the store. Just read the help files in Power Producer on how to do this.

Then you should have all the functionality your looking for on your stand-alone DVD player.

Hey nelly. It is easier to use the Share Station DVD Burner. What you give up for that convenience is not being able to edit your videos or add titles or DVD menus. If that doesn't matter to you and just want a quick way to burn your videos to DVD, the Share Station is a good option.

By the way, if you have a question that doesn't have to do with viewing Everio .MOD (video) files on your computer, could you please start a new thread with your question?

I know this thread has many questions that don't have to do with viewing .MOD files but it's getting kind of long. If you create a new thread in the future, more people will see your question and you may get more answers.

Thanks

Vista goodies

After having installed Vista ultimate 2 weeks ago I have been very pleased. I played with my mc500 and tried the support for the .mod format.
1. .Mod files displays as thumbnails even in extra large. Now I quickly can find duplicate files. No need for extra codec or rename to .mpg.
2. Media center extender with Xbox360 streamed Everio .mod files to my television without problems, but alas -no thumbnails on the xbox.
3. Doing basal editing in windows movie maker -like cutting, merging and transition was supported. Even DVD creation.

All in all a good experience.
