After installing the VCM 9 pack from microsoft

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/wi...n&qstechnology=

I was able to get some decent looking WMV wrapped in an AVI

OK, now what do I really have to do to convert AVCHD?

I own the SR1, and absolutely love it. The quality of the images is nothing short of breathtaking.

I am willing to spend some money to be able to convert the files into a form that can be edited -- without losing HD quality. I tried installing the trial version of Tmpgenc Express v4, but as others have pointed out, this won't work without some other codec being installed. Can someone please tell me exactly what codec I need to purchase (or get for free)?

Also, if the path through Windows Media can actually work (the directions just link to the generic download page for WM11), that might be interesting as well.

In either case, I think there's a community of folks that would be well served by a simple "install this, then install this, then use this editor" recipe for editing AVCHD files.

My goal is just to use a simple editing program. I don't have any lofty aspirations (like using Final Cut); I just want to be able to do simple jump cuts and titles. And I can't believe Sony didn't get this all straightened out with their Vegas folks before they shipped!

Any help here?

Thanks,

Power DVD7 trial version is sufficient for the codec.

That worked!

Thanks!

Next question: now I have a "better" .m2t file. I tried dragging it from my PC over to a Mac. No hope getting iMovie HD to read it, even when I tried changing its extension to mp2, mp4, mpeg or mpg.

If someone has this figured out, I'd like to know. Otherwise I'll start digging, and will report what I learn.

Cheers,

The software that comes with the camera can convert all your AVCHD files to MPEG files. Is there a reason you don't want to do that?

Yes, as pointed out earlier in the thread that conversion process lowers the video quality to SD. I was looking for a process that kept the video quality at HD.

The answer to my question was simple: just select a different output format for TMPGEnc.

Avid Liquid 7 will handle m2t WITHOUT a loss of quality. You can capture, edit and render to HD. In fact Liquid was one of the first NLE's to be able to capture and edit in native HD. I am almost certain that pinnacle studio 10.5 will as well.... AL7 and studio now share the same render engines.

Vegas for Windows

I've been using Vegas to edit the M2T files, and it works pretty well, but it's a windows only product.

Liquid and Vegas won't do him any good. He wants to edit the output from his AVCHD cam, which is stored in .m2ts files. .m2t files are what HDV cams produce.

Good luck.

I'm tempted to call troll on this one, but...

Right now there is nothing that edits the "M2TS" files in the classical sense of the word. At this point there is no option but to transcode the AVCHD M2TS file to HDV M2T files. Then you can load the M2T files into something like Avid or Vegas or whatever.

That's all,

If you're calling me a troll, forget it. The discussion here has been how to edit AVCHD. Two posts mentioned using Vegas and Liquid 7 to edit .m2t files with no reference to transcoding .m2ts to .m2t. If that workflow works, then fine. I just don't see the value of answering "use program x to edit .m2t files" when the question is "what do I use to edit .m2ts files?" It seemed confusing and off the point.

Good luck.

Yeah I tried changing the name of an m2ts file to m2t and load in Vegas, but Vegas won't read it. I would guess Sony will release a version soon that will however.

Sony Vegas 7.0

On sony vegas site today.

Note Regarding AVCHD camcorder support in Sony Vegas 7 software
Sony Vegas 7 does not currently support the AVCHD camcorder format.
In Spring 2007, AVCHD camcorder support will be included in a free update for all registered Vegas 7 users.

Interesting. I wonder when Vegas 8 is due out though.

I have heard it said that the part of Sony that makes hardware is oblivious to the part that makes Vegas. So much so that Sony installs Premier Pro on Sony laptops. When marketing reps at trade shows are asked why they don't install Vegas they say "Huh? Vegas?" I guess this is just one more example of that. Who could have imagined that people using Sony's flagship NLE would want to edit video from Sony's new AVCHD camcorders?

Good luck.

Dennis
