My problem is intermintant.
I purchased my SCD107 on January 16th, 2005 at Best Buy. It has worked great until 11-6-2007 when it went dark while on on vacation. I called customer service that day and the told me to take off the battery then put it back on then switch to camera mode while pushing the Easy button. It seemed to correct the problem for a day then it went dark again then it came back by itself. Then on Tuesday, Christmas Day 2007 right in the middle of the festivities it went black again, great timing.
Today is Saturday 12-29-2007 and I turned it on holding the Easy Button and it is working. Here are my questions.
Is pushing the Easy Button really doing something or is it a coincident that the CCD corrects itself?
I plan to call Samsung once I get my receipt duplicated by Best Buy. Can anyone recommend what my approach should take with SamSung?
If I get nowhere with Samsung I will join the CA Lawsuit but should I buy the CCD Assembly from Tigerdirect for $55.00 and install it.
I can not afford a new camera right now and I recently purchased 2 extended life batteries for it. Not to mention I am about to be a Grandpa for the first time and I want to be prepared.
Thank you,
Al from Michigan.

I signed on to this CAL back in December! I have emailed these fellows 3 times for that PDF copy of the complaint that they offer on the site and once to find out the status of the suit! Well, I have heard zip, zero, nada! I really appreciate their efforts and to the fellow who went to them to begin the action but, mabye at least an update on their site would be nice??? I began my fight with Samsung back in Jan 2006 and continued thru(really still ongoing) Nov 2006! After many months of phone calls, emails and arguements, they finally agreed to repair my camera (SCD23)! I made them agree to pay all shipping which they did! However, They lost my cam after it arrived, more arguements, then they agreed to replace it! ( I took pictures, recorded phone calls, saved emails and documented all communications)! They tried to send me a SCD293,, NO WAY I said! Then the SCD363 but they ran out of stock and told me it could be 6 months! Man, I about blew my top! I told them they better $)-(!+ my camera pronto or I was gonna go to the FBI immediately! So, as a temp measure they sent an SCD963, supposedly the top camera MiniDV cam they had at the time! Well, what I got was a rebuilt SCD963 and the thing is a piece of junk!! It weighs nothing so even your heartbeat makes it shake, it is so small I can hardly push a single button without hitting another and the carrier mechanism is so noisy it is sometimes heard on the recording! It does make a decent quality tape (when the noise isn't there) but, it is not the $400.00 SCD23 w/ nite vision I had before! I have since been trying to return it but they refuse so I am ready for this lawsuit to proceed! Samsung is one corrupt co.! If you don't believe it, do a search on my posts and check out my posts on the subject! It will make you cringe at what these guys have been up to! Just one example of their corruption: They conspired with Hynix to fix the the price of Computer chips on the world market and got caught! They caused everyone of us to pay way more for CPU's and RAM than it should have! So far they have been fined over 200 million $$ by the US Govt and Korean Govt! Several of the top Execs are now in prison ! The president of Samsung is now under indictment for, amoung other things, under the table contributions to the Clinton campaign thru the Chinese back in 92 and 96 ! Man what a bunch a scum! I hope they get whats comin! I will never knowingly buy another Samsung product as long as I live!!
Good Luck All, 23 SkiDoo

Well some more good news here!
I just received an email from the law firm that started the class action lawsuit, and hopefully they will be successful in making Samsung pay! I suggest to everyone that has not got their camcorder repaired or is unhappy with what Samsung has done to 'fix' the problem, to keep the fight going!
I am sickened by how many people this company is trying to rip off! Lets make these scum bags pay for the horrible products they are putting out on the market...and I agree with you 23_SkiDoo, I will NEVER buy another Samsung POS product again!
Again, good luck to everyone!

Class Action Lawsuit Settlement
SAMSUNG AGREES TO SETTLE PROPOSED CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT
September 24, 2008 -- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Samsung Electronics America, in cooperation with Sandweiss Law Center, P.C., announces that they have settled a proposed class action lawsuit. In 2007, attorney Stuart Sandweiss filed the lawsuit against Samsung in the U.S. District Court in Detroit, Michigan.
The lawsuit alleged that the Samsung manufactured several camcorder models with CCD imager problems that prevented the camcorders from recording video images. Samsung has agreed to the settlement as part of its longstanding commitment to customer service and in the spirit of putting consumers first. The settlement is not an admission of liability or of any wrongdoing.
As part of the settlement, Samsung has agreed to repair or replace the defective models at no cost to the consumer. Customers who have already paid to have their camcorders replaced will receive a refund of the amount paid for the purchase, replacement and/or repair.
The affected models include:
SCD 23, SCD 27, SCD 103, SCD 107
Consumers who have provided their contact information through this website ( www.samsungclassaction.com ) will be contacted directly by Samsung. Consumers who have an affected camcorder and did not provide their contact information are encouraged to do so.
Pursuant to the settlement agreement, on September 24, 2008, the U.S. District Court entered a Stipulated Order dismissing Siegel's Complaint.
Consumers who wish to arrange to repair or replace a defective camcorder covered by this settlement, may contact:

Anybody heard from Samsung?
Just wondering if anyone has had a response from Samsung yet on returning/repairing their camcorder?
My understanding from the classaction lawsuit site is that Samsung would be contacting those that had signed up for the lawsuit.
Based on previous experience w/Samsung, I'm not holding my breath on that happening.

Samsux!!
Winging It,,
~You took the words right out of my mouth! I am ready after almost 3 years to get this over with! I sent them my SCD23 cam and they lost it!!!! So they tried to send me some bottom feeder cam:SCD293 and I absolutely refused! Thank goodness I had taken pictures of my cam, the packing of it (made them send a UPS Call Tag), the sending of it, documented the date of arrival w/the signature of the person who signed for it at SEA, documented all emails & phone calls w/SamSux! Because, if I had not, they tried the old "we never received your camera" and would have ripped me thru & thru!! What a scumbag corporation Samsung is!(People should research my posts on the corruption I dug up on Samsux over a year ago.) It would blow your mind. Several of the top CEO's are in prison, and just this past summer the Founder's son and CEO was found guilty of tax evasion! That is just the icing,, there is much, much more! I finally was able to force them(threatened to call the FBI) to send me what, at the time, was the top of the line MiniDV cam they sold: SCD963! What a piece of JUNK!! Tape carrier mechanism is so noisy, the whirring sound ends up on any tape you make! It does not have the NiteVision my SCD23 had and it is so small I can hardly stand to use it! Buttons are so close together only a Pigmy(no offense to little people) can operate it comfortablely! It is basically worthless in my opinion! And Hell,,, I am one of the lucky ones because I actually got Samsung to do something! So, I told them I hated this cam and wanted something different and they said that was the bast they had and was all they would do! That is when I said they were getting ready to be sued and I would be the firast to join! Of course they blew me off(not actually ha ha!) I think since they basically had to be forced to admit they sold us all Good cams that had BAD CCD's in them!!(That they knew were bad when they installed them too,, see my research posts!!) And then had to be forced to repair our cams! And it has been so damn long... MiniDv technology is basically out-dated now! I think we should all be given our choice of Repair of the SCD23,24,27 etc, etc... or the newer tech Hard Drive cams! Unfortunately I can't opt for the repair of my cam since they lost it. But, I damn sure don't want another one of these SCD963 pieces of CR@P!! I would rather have my SCD23 back right now! I URGE EVERYONE INVOLVED IN THIS SUIT, DO NOT CAPITULATE UNTIL SAMSUNG GIVES YOU EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT!!! I will post this on all pertinent threads! I missed so much taping of my kids growing up because of those JERKS! I spent over $400 on my SCD23 back in 2004(which hurt alot then but ,I thought I would get many years of documenting my family, therefore justifying the expense! But, I only got 6 actual hours of record time when it went blank! I Don't Hate much in Life, just my migraines And I Hate SamSux!!
WE HAVE TO STICK TOGETHER TO THE END ON THIS OR THEY WILL STILL RUN ALL OVER US! IT IS IN THEIR NATURE!!

black screen of death in Canada
Hi all - have SCD23 and have been monitoring this site for a while now. Kudos to the person who figured out to shine it into a bright light - it does actually spring back to life. Realized the CAL was taking place in the States but thought I would try and see if they would take mine back as well. Called the 1-800 number, got a very friendly tech who knew all about the recall and tried to enter my address into the system. Bottom line is no problem taking the camera back but he can't send the replacement to Canada. He was more than willing to send me one to a U.S. address. My brother owns a condo in Fla. so can use that address, however this friendly tech suggested I try Samsux Canada first. Well they knew nothing about any problem/recall with SCD23 camcorders so I directed the gentleman to the CAL settlement page on the net - all of a sudden he needs to talk to his superior who states that `that's in the U.S. - we're doing nothing here about it but thanks for your $450 cdn.' That's why they're Samsux.
Anyhow, the friendly U.S. tech says they are replacing them with SCD382's - now googling that camera it sells for around $150-$200 - I paid $450 cdn for the one I have now - would that be an equivalent camera ? Sorry for the dumb question but since the black screen of death I have been out of the Camcorder interest club.

Some progress made
Well, according to the CAL settlement, I thought Samsung was supposed to contact those that had signed up for the CAL. That didn't happen (yet). I sent an email to the CAL website asking how long it would be prudent to wait to hear something. No response back on that, either. So........I called the 800 number listed for the settlement.
The nice, but fast talking specialist, first updated the warranty expiration date for my camcorder, which then allowed her to make a claim, send me a UPS return label, etc. Said it would be 5-7 days to repair. When I asked if it would be repaired or replaced, she said it depended on what the repair folks found.
So....I boxed up my useless paper weight and shipped it off today.
Will update this board later with the results.

My camcorder has been repaired
My camcorder (SCD-103) has finally been repaired for FREE.
Here’s what has happened since my previous post on November 18, 2008:
November 18 Shipped my camcorder to CVE repair center in Riverdale, NJ.
November 21 Camcorder received by CVE per UPS tracking system.
November 25 Noticed the Samsung repair ticket had been cancelled. No reason given. Called the Samsung 800# and they couldn’t explain why the ticket had been cancelled. They re-opened the ticket.
November 26 The repair ticket was marked as closed. No further information given. I received an email from Samsung requesting I fill out a survey on their repair process. I did not respond favorably since I had no idea what was done or whether the camcorder had been repaired/replaced. Later in the day, I received an email that the camcorder was being shipped back to me via UPS and given a tracking number.
December 2 I received the camcorder.
The camcorder will now record and play back. I haven’t had time to assess if there is any noticeable difference in the quality of the picture. I have no idea what was done to repair the camcorder, but I did receive back the same unit that I shipped in. I’m still trying to remember how to use the camcorder and its features since it has been a year and a half since it last worked.
