If you live in Canada (like I do) you can't get stuff from US online stores, which sometimes sell things cheaper.
I assumed you wanted a DVD writer. You know what format you want to put your finished stuff on, so get the appropriate equipment.
educational discount is a discount available to schools and students. Some places will give you a discount.

Usually you have to shown proof that you are a student. Check with the company in question as to whether or not they offer educational discounts and what the procedure is.
I know Apple offers educational discounts. I really don't know which other computer vendors offer computer discounts, you'll have to ask someone else or somewhere else (try the ars technica forum as I suggested).

Since we are opening old wounds anyway, the Mac G5s are out, and they are fast (but expensive).

cc I don't like Mac and its a little to expensive. I am not doing professional editing its just a hobby I would called it. I am looking to spend from 1000-1400 on the actual PC not including monitor ect. I was look @ flat panel monitors or are CRTs a better choice?>?
oh ya did u look at the link cc?

cc i finally took a little of your advice i went to the mac store at my local mall and checked them out. They are diiffertent from what iam used to but i can see why they would be good for editing like they always say dont judje a book by its cover. i like the g5 its just to expensive any other sugg. by any one else.

I wholeheartedly agree, the G5s are extremely impressive, but also very expensive (double plus). I have one (the dual 2 GHZ) on order myself, and the price certainly does make me whince. On the other hand, the product duration of viability is at least double its' PC counterparts, so, in the long run, the cost differential is not much. You could go with a G4 for a much lower price, however, the G5s are such a forward leap (not just in processor speed) that I think you would likely regret it later.

RandomOck, it sounds like a 17" iMac with SuperDrive and Final Cut Express would fit the bill for you. I believe there are discounts for buying FCE and Office v.X with the hardware.
So get a Mac. You'll have a better editing experience, a better overall computing experience, and girls will think you're sexy.

A few minutes, or even hours, is not enough experience with a new OS to pass an educated judgement on it. Had you spent a little more time, you would not have regreted making a switch to Mac. On the other hand, it is almost certain that you will experience problems with the Windows OS that you will come to regret later, and would have avoided with the Mac OS. Oh well, good luck anyway.
