Vegas not recognizing camera

I posted this on the Canon board but then thought this might be a more appropriate place:

I've been using Vegas (version 6) for a few years now, but have just switched from a Panasonic camera to the HV30. When I connect the camera to the computer through the firewire cable, it does not seem to be recognized by Vegas.

When I go to Capture Video a notice pops up that says: "The device microsoft av/c tape subunit device could not be opened. Please make sure that it is turned on and is not being used by another application or user."

I'm sure I'm forgetting something simple, maybe something that needs to be done the first time you use a new camera? Any ideas?
