Vegas Vidcap Problem and Solution

Recently I ran into a problem with Vegas Pro's Vidcap program. I have a Canopus box connected to a VCR that I have successfully used for years. Suddenly Vidcap stopped working. I'd click to start it and nothing would happen. I could see from the Task Manager that no new processes were starting.

Curiously, I could capture with WinDV from the VCR through the Canopus box so it didn't seem to be a generic problem, just an issue with Vidcap.

I tried reinstalling Vegas but Vidcap still wouldn't run.

Since Vidcap had last worked I had replaced a Kensington mouse with a Logitech mouse and uninstalled the Kensington driver and replaced it with the Logitech driver which is called SetPoint. These actions seemed suspect so I focused on them.

I uninstalled SetPoint and lo and behold, Vidcap worked fine. Just to confirm, I reinstalled SetPoint and Vidcap wouldn't start just as before. Uninstall SetPoint again and Vidcap was fine. Somehow the SetPoint driver was interfering with Vidcap. Luckily the Logitech mouse defaults to a standard wheel mouse without SetPoint. I lose the wheel click features but I can live without them and SetPoint.

So, tuck this away in your memory hole in case you ever install Logitech drivers in the future. Maybe it'll save you some grief and time trying to figure out why Vidcap won't run.

Good luck.

Dennis
