Fluid head question

I found this so-called "fluid head" @ b&h photo, now I realize that fluid heads are very expensive and start around $500, but why are they lying by saying it is a fluid head, I thought B&H was reliable? Here's the link: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/con...u=229687&is=REG Also, I was wondering if anyone had any reccommendations for cheap tripod heads (by cheap I mean under $150) weight isn't really an issue since I would be mainly be using it with a pv-gs120 which is really light. Thanks.

Well, you can pay $500 or more for a fluid head, but that doesn't make B&H a liar for selling one for less. There are many manufacturers of tripods that make fluid heads for under $500. Manfrotto/Bogen is one and apparently Davis and Sanford is another.

Are those cheap fluid heads any better than one of those $80-$100 triopods you might find at bestbuy, or is there no real noticable difference??

B&H is simply using the model number and description that Davis & Sanford have put on it. The term "fluid head" is very loosely used by every manufacturer.

Yes, a true fluid head is probably over $500 but amazingly, many heads over $500 are not true fluid heads either! They are often "lubricated friction" heads. It seems that when the term fluid head is used, they are merely saying that the head has a sufficiently smooth action to suggest that it is fluid like. Still, they are not created equal.

The Davis & Sanford that you link to is probably the best you can get for the absolute lowest price.

The next step up in price is probably the Bogen/Manfrotto 700RC "Mini Video Head" (perhaps around $70, I don't remember). There is also the B/M 390RC2 "Junior Head". The Junior is also sold on a small, light tripod, as a combo, called the 728B "Digi Tripod". This would probably work very well for a GS120.

I bought the Bogen 3130 Head only and mounted it on a Quantary tripod I had from Ritz, in place of the original head. Bogen has a few around this price range that are real fluid heads and give good results.

Nickdog,

You appear very knowledgable on the subject of tripods....Could you check my thread and offer your opinion? The thread is entitled, "Good "budget" tripod ideas wanted!!!"

Thank you

Rudi
