Best Camcorder for Low Light (Night Vision)?
I am curious to learn more about which cameras offer the best low light capabilities? I've heard one can't rely on comparing LUX numbers.
Any help would be greately appreciated.
Thanks,
DkM

The prosumer cams best in low light are (in order based on my experience):
VX2100
XL1S
GL2
DVX100
DVC80 (really a pro cam)
DVC30 (this is the only one of these high end cams with IR--0 lux)
There are probably some JVCs (like the HD1) that fit in there somehow, but I have no experience with them. The above cams all have 1/4" or 1/3" CCDs. Anything smaller, like the 1/4.7" PDX10, TRV950, and GS400, lose light sensitivity rapidly (like 2-3 F/stops {12-18 dB gain} worse than the above).

I agree, I have both the Sony VX-2100 and the TRV950, and in low light, the VX2100 is far superior. I do a lot of low light shooting, (concerts, stage performances etc) and the VX2100 gives great video.
Don't get me wrong, the TRV950 shoots great video too, just about as good as the VX2100, provided that you have good ligting.
As far as the lux rating, the VX2100 is rated at 1 lux, whereas the TRV950 is rated around 7 lux I think.

Now that Paris Hilton has proven night vision aint just for special ops anymore, I imagine that manufacturers will be improving low light dramatically over the coming years.
Wait for the 05 models.
